The drums were cast iron finish however the face where the wheel bolts up would have been brush painted a semigloss black on a painted wheel, chrome wheel or ten spoke car so as not to let surface rust show through the spokes. I use a 2 inch brush and leave some obvious brush strokes around the edge.Think quick and sloppy. Evidence seems to indicate this was typically done with the drum mounted .

Not saying every 66 Shelby was built or painted the same. But one of my previous unrestored 66s with only 4,600 original miles had the entire diff housing brush painted. Could still see the brush strokes. Also the face of the brake drums. The paint was very thin, not a heavy coat.

Well you can say based on the evidence with high confidence that the vast majority of 66 Shelby's diff housings were spray painted given that specific part. The housings and the backing plates were not painted at the same time and likely on different lines . Strange things can happen but your example is not typical. Maybe not in your case but the "anything is possible" explanation is typically a excuse to justify a non original part or process. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Also good to remember that just because the part or process was one way on one car does not always mean it is justification for any other then THAT car for it to be that way on.

Have owned several early cars. The car mentioned was the only example of my cars with that method. It still had the original DSO markings also. I prefer to spray the housings.
