Hi all,
I am excited to say that 5S274 joins my stable. She has a heavy race history and is well documented in registry and Shelby Marquee. Don Buck raced her for many years, and then she was raced locally.
Now she needs restoration and I am looking forward to it.
Thanks to all who have been involved so far. I'll post some pics when I can and will no doubt be hanging out more on this page as I restore the great 65 features.
Cheers
Congrats and enjoy the ride
Great to hear, have fun.
Thanks all.
Here is a few photos of then
Original owner (who I have spoken too)
With car in 1965 after they painted it green to avoid police attention
When it raced with Don Buck
Current state, needing fenders and paint etc
Updating registry with Howard at moment

Love to hear the interesting background on these cars and WELCOME TO THE CLUB ... THE REAL ONES!
Congratulations on the purchase and good luck with the restoration!
Cool history, enjoy the process.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the well wishes.
I spoke to the original owner in the last few days.
He ordered it with a Roll cage and that was in there when they picked it up from the dealership. Pretty cool
You can see it in the newspaper pic, that's October 65
One more pic guys, here is the original receipt when the car was bought from used car yard/wrecker in 1970 for $600
How times have changed
Congrats Trent!
Great story and purchase. Good luck on the restoration!

This one has too much day 2 history to become just another white/blue restoration. Put it back to that October configuration and keep the history alive - it will stand out in a crowd. Bruce Berger bought 020 from HiPerf Motors and within 2 months had painted it beige because his daughters couldn't leave the house without getting stopped.

Thanks Bob, I'll no doubt be calling on your expertise. Appreciate it
Thanks all. Yeah she has some unusual day 2 stuff. Lots of history to pay homage too. The roll cage is pretty cool. 2nd owner has some more day 2 pics he is digging up and I'll post them once I have them

Many Shelby's received their "Day 2" mods years down the road. Since these were done so early it makes it unique and significant - IMHO........
I agree, the roll cage will stay 100%
Original owner 100% sure it was ordered with it.
Mirror on side I would like to get, anyone make out type?

You should check with Howard to see if he has anything on the rollbar.

Thanks Bob.Been taking to Howard a bit about the race history and roll cage. Filling in some gaps. 2nd owner is also certain he saw the car and it had roll cage in it just after pick up new.
Hard to prove SA put it in, theory was maybe dealer asked them to put it in after? The dealer and SA were close in location

If that close then Hi-Performance Motors might be the likely installer IMO.
Agree Bob, I am no expert on who would have done it but I wish I knew. It's certainly interesting and I'll be keeping it in
A fun resto ahead..
Roll bar yes as an option from the SA accessories list early on (the front extensions that hug the front windshield don't look like they are there in the October 1965 grainy photo)....roll cage no in 1965....cages didn't start to be the norm until 1967 and on at least in SCCA.

It was one of those things where there was no rule against a cage - but who'd add weight? In the 67 GCRs a cage becomes "recommended". SA didn't use a cage in 67.

Splat! That must've been spectacular to see. Looks like he went under an 18 wheeler.

Rick Titus told me how it happened. It was during practice. He kept bumping the hay bales at the exit of the turn to make it wider. He didn't know there was an immovable post behind the bales. They used a floorjack in the car and pretty much got it back to the right shape

No front extensions the original owner said, it looks identical to the 4 point ones in the R models. Cutouts in the interior panels are lined with door windlace.

Speaking of day 2 changes. While looking inside the trunk on 5S274 on Saturday I spotted this from the first owners green paint job
I'll keep it as history

I don't know what mirror it is but I've got this one that I've had for probably more than 45 years if your interested.
Small trivia point but: 1965 GT-350s did not come with side mirrors.
Any side mirror is a non-stock day-two change.
I didn't run one until cited in the mid 1970's.

Agree completely, prob a good survey thread as to everyone's mirror of choice. Still up in the air for me too as to what I do.
The typical go to mirror for the add on 65 is the bullet mirror which would have been the most easily accessed from the Ford parts department and used on all 66's .The Talbot style would be second IMO. Ether way it is your car so do what you think best for you.

National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966 addressed safety standards, including rear visibility, which led to driver side mirrors becoming required equipment.
The Federal law only required that NEW cars get the driver side mirror. Most states around that time enacted laws stating that all cars require 2 mirrors. If your state doesn't currently have the requirement for a 2nd mirror and your car is pre 66 you don't need one.

I think that's the way I am heading Bob. I like the Bullet
Why didnt the 65 shelbys come with a side mirror?
