1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Re: 2203 had a bad day.

Considering what a driver GT350 auto FB is worth. Hagerty #2 if it was that good before is under 90K. So if someone buys this car and fixes it to a #2 condition it is worth 90K. Copart says it is worth 95K the way it sits. Sure, OK. Flooded cars pose many problems including bacteria and such. Bill used to do cars like this in his auto business. Unfortunately someone will buy this and possibly not do it right and it could harm someone down the road. To me it is now a parts car as the value is in selling off the parts because to redo the car as Pete mentioned pricewise would put you way over retail value. Unless they build an Eleanor....

This whole discussion reminds me of the vinyl top fastbacks that we use to find from time to time in Calif. Same sort of adding things to make cars stand out and sell especially in the later months of the production year when sales slumped. That was an Acme Top, out of LA thing. But that's another thread and discussion.  ::)

I first saw this 70 Mach1 in 1984. Yellow with a vinyl top. A good friend later owned the car. The 69 Shelby vinned Boss 302 is next to it in its "1984" trim.

Quote from: 98SVT - was 06GT on December 09, 2024, 08:33:43 PMDon't kid yourself with your budget. It's a you can pay me now or pay me later world. In the end you'll spend more buying a project than a good driver car. The only way you could possibly come out ahead is if you can personally swap out rusted sheet metal do the body and paint work along with being a capable mechanic who can overhaul the drivetrain. You'll also need to rely on repro parts since a lot of "affordable" project cars have had the expensive bits sold off.
They are still out there. I bought one last May. The key is of course if you can't do any of the work yourself buy one done or a presentable driver. I got a lot of hours in already restoring many of the components on the car and now the car is out for some body work. Yes, original parts are hard to find as I'm still looking for many. I think car owners are hoarding their spare parts.

Has anyone brought up the subject of panel fitment? Is the contour of a 68 Cougar the SAME as a Mustang fastback or coupe? How is the fitment on a Mustang of the roof panels?

Hi Scott, I got an error saying your mailbox is full. Never seen that before.

Quote from: thinkshelby on December 08, 2024, 01:25:52 PMThis post is me seeking to learn more about (67 and 68) Shelbys.

How should the red/orange primer parts look?  Does the answer apply equally to '68s?

As mentioned you should not really compare the two. Each has little to do with the other when you get to the details. Somethings similar but not the same in other words. As Pete mentioned - Mustangs were built at different plants and by different workers and the conversions - just the same - two different companies, processes, suppliers for many things ....

Quote from: thinkshelby on December 08, 2024, 01:25:52 PMIt seems too glossy (e.g. photo 85).
It also looks like orange was sprayed over some uneven surfaces, and folks just stopped painting at odd places, like in photos 96 and 97 and 106 (no orange above the power steering components).
And there are different orange colors: 105.

In my eye the floor color original had a greater shine that what most people think of. Guess its the term many used - Red Oxide - that brings up memories of Rustoleum rattle can red oxide. In this case it was an epoxy based paint/sealer and not an open (flat) primer that was designed to be over coated with another layer of paint making it more rust proof.  Now all of the over spray from the exterior body color, pinch weld black out and black wheel well and engine compartment painting each create a flatter and rougher look where there is fine or slightly more over spray on the floors and frame rails. And originally there was overspray on most of the floors from about the firewall rearward due to high flow and high pressures the guns used.

Add to all of this 50 years of age and use and the surface is flatter due to those elements also. Not saying it is a high gloss finish but you can get a light to reflect off of a cleaned original floor color both the epoxy primer sealer or a batch color used on other years and models

This might help in relationship with the 67 undercarriage. Still need to create one for 68 NJ built Mustangs/Shelbys

Jeff, I cannot get the link to work. I'd love to see a 68 detailed underside done.

Back in the early 80s I went to see a Cobrajet Mach1 for sale in Brighton Mi. While looking at it the guy pulls a cover off a black with red interior CJ Mach1. It was originally owned by Heinz Prector. ASC put in the Sunroof when new along with a custom red cloth seats and headliner. Car was black. I wish I would have kept track of where I went as I have yet to see the car again 40 plus years later. The car was not restored right body wise as the paint was so so but it did have the ASC Cougar Sunroof in it. Is it factory? What is factory in this case? I got a friend(was a Ford engineer at the time) who took an 80s Anniversary  Cougar fully loaded  and had it shipped before delivery down to Atlanta to a major company doing conversions for the big 3 and had them convert it into a Convertible. He still owns it. All was done before delivery to him. Virtually no miles on it.

With everything paid for so to speak I got a kidney stone attack early Thursday morning. A CAT scan revealed a stone not far from my bladder. No problem I thought as I'd pass it in no time . Well at a Hotel in Indiana I woke up 3 in the morning on Saturday puking in extreme pain. Finally got back to sleep at 7. Got up at 8:30. 45 minutes to Rosemont and as luck would have it our room at the Crown Plaza wasn't ready(even at 9-10 it usually is) and a first-we couldn't park in their lot until my room was ready! So parked at the outlet mall and walked over. In pain the whole time. I was wiped by early afternoon and the pain got worse so headed back and got our room. Saw a few people I knew at the show but got very little pics but the red 69 was Shelby's old car that Jim Cowles restored many years ago. I was hoping to go back later that night but the pain prevented it. As luck would have it I passed the stone near the time the show was ending so never went back. Had plans for the next 3 days so didn't go on Sunday. My friend Bill was there and shot a lot of pics so here you go:

The "Stellar Seller" said : "I have been extremely open, transparent and honest with everyone I have ever dealt with. I earned this over a 50 year tenure as no one ever gave me anything I didn't earn. The shame of this entire situation is this particular car is 56 years old and for its age is probably one of the nicest cars I've ever had".Since I don't want to get into the warts on the BaT site I will here for anyone researching this car in the future. Please let me know if I'm off base on what I see.
1) rear quarters in door jambs are filled smooth indicating quarter panel replacement. So with quarters. Vert quarters are as rare as hens teeth. Repos? What type. No pics of the drop off areas to see if correct or not.
2) floors pretty much replaced. When floors are that bad chances are inner rockers are too. Were they addressed?
3) Doors. LH looks later 70. RH I've never seen before so must be repo.
4) No trunk light wiring
5) No pics of the inside of the trunk.
6) too many painted bolts and switches.
7) Missing tilt switch in A pillar.
8 ) missing smog
9)missing shifter seal
10)Vert visor header looks like crap(paint peeling?)
11) PB bracket bolted on
12)NAPA bolts for vert underside brace.
13)look at the rusty booster that came off the car
14)door plates mounted wrong and latch screws looked like they had the paint ground off of them
15)damaged A frame and crappy looking(not restored) lower area with NAPA spiral Rad hose clamp
16)Wrong hardware front valance and bumpers plus no valance blackout
17)DS headlight bucket damaged
18)Gold painted MC cap
19)Replaced suspension parts
20)spiral clamps on AC hoses, flex fan, wrong hardware on "smooth" fan shroud
21)Wrong horns
22)Painted hood latch
23)black painted grill
24)painted hood hinges and springs
25)Wrong battery cables
26)No heat shield or S tube
27)Wrong radiator cap
28)missing hood bumper
29) many painted bolts on core support and engine bay
30)inner hood incorrectly painted
31)Aftermarket Radiator
32)Aftermarket voltage regulator
33) Aftermarket starter solenoid
34) Export braces wrong paint
35)wrong coil
36) non factory wiring under hood
37)License plate bracket painted black
38)Wrong antenna
39)Rear Valance distorted out(?)
40)Ps side outer door handle screw isn't tight and painted(bottomed out?)
41) door speaker grill hardware incorrect
42) Window cranks appear to be "short"
43)no trim on brake pedal
44) door panel lights are not  working
45)Both doors appear to have clear glass
46)Door window and qtr window stop hardware in all 4 places incorrect
47)glove box bumper missing
48)Screw holding Shelby console to the main console body(indicates broken spring clips on center Shelby piece)
49)"Blood" on wiper washer switch knob and bezel
50)Radio bezel worn out. AM radio but door speakers mounted
51)Wrong screws radio bezel
52)Chrome wore off dash bezels
53)Visor bumpers are cracked and yellowed
54)incorrect rear view mirror mount
55)Seat back handles improperly clocked plus DS has some type of spacer??
56)Boot snaps incorrect or missing
57)sill plates "too shiny"
58)Door felt pop riveted and not stapled
59)too big of a gap between rear Valance and quarters which leads to possible quarter replacement?
60)no backup light gaskets
61)Cheap exhaust
63)Aftermarket trans pan
64) wrong plastic wiring clamps in engine bay

With more pics I'm sure I could add to the list plus there are multiple things in some columns. My point? Well if you haven't figured it out go read the red quote from the seller. So the car is on par with his brand new Coyote engine Cobras he has sold? Not a chance. Feel free to add to the list.
To be clear most cars at auction we can make a list for. Most cars are not perfect including my cars. The point is he hyped the car up still after the "issues" were brought forth to him. I'm thinking to do this car right I'd have to find a rust free 1969  6 cyl or 302 vert and cannibalize it for all the sheet metal this car would need to make it just a correct bodied driver. I'm hoping for the new owner that the car is  structurally good enough to enjoy as the paint looks really nice on it but the car has sold 4 TIMES this year alone.....

Quote from: Bill on December 04, 2024, 08:10:10 AMCan we please now debunk the "owned by shelby" story line.
There are plenty of cars that years ago, were titled in CS name to add a perceived value, yet CS never touched the car, or actually owned it.  ::)

Wasn't even owned by Shelby.....was owned by the Shelby Foundation
Lets see the car was appraised for 300K when donated. If the person who donated a car he bought for less than possibly 100K gets that 300K value in 2015 as a donation isn't that a little illegal? Not only that it was donated years after Carroll had departed this earth.

Before the end of auction a few of us had been discussing many cars including this one on BaT through a group text chat that was started about a month ago. Me and 3 Canadian friends. We discuss Fords and Pontiacs mostly. One of my friends was asking hard questions and I bit my tongue on the auction to the seller's "outright lies" and the term was said to me from a FORMER owner of this car who will remain nameless at his request. No trunk pics? No lower rear quarter pics?Rear frame rail pics? Parts missing. Parts not installed right. The door jambs looked like they bondoed the rear quarter to B pillar so the quarter edge is missing. Too many vague pics but the pass door look like a foreign repo unit and the DS looks to be a 70. I got tired of the seller crowing about his "Stellar Reputation" and the "fact" Shelby owned the car and can you imagine him taking it out on a Saturday night to dinner. To put it this way a dealer on BaT told me this seller gives dealers a bad name. I'll leave it at that.
Then the kiss a$$es who crow about what a great car or the buyer got a great deal. Blah, Blah, Blah. Hey, as long as the new owner is happy that is all that matters. I wish he would join here as I reached out to him  saying the SAAC community would help him if he wanted it. In the end we are all here to promote our hobby and part of that promoting I believe is to help people not to get ripped off on scams, clones(rebodies), mis represented cars.
