SAAC Forum Discussion Area / Re: Big Block Radiators
March 19, 2025, 04:38:35 PM
Most big block and boss radiators out there are only 2'' cores with 3 rows of 1/2'' tubes BUT factory concours correct cores are wider 3 rows of 5/8'' tubes and i have to special order them made in detroit at at cost of over $1000.00 per core now as they doubled in last 6 years or so (like everything else). You need the wide core to help from overheating in big blocks. I have 2 old skool radiators guy in my area that i use and we take rads apart strip all metal and reasemble them according to date and trans and east or west modine and 67 side straps are different and 68s have 4 humps on side straps and 69 dont have the humps and 70s have the 2 raised ribs on top and bottom corners so u have to assemble them according to the car and when built. I have had to change or correct almost every car that comes thru our shop as original radiators are getting very hard to find and highly visable part up front where u see it. I got many new 2'' cores here i took out and will sell cheap if anybody wants them also make sure side strap with #s gets put back on the rh side of rad as i got 2 here that were assembled on the wrong lh side. U dont have to take the rad cap off to see if tubes are 1/2'' or 5/8'' just look at the 2 center cross rods as they should be tight against the core and if a 3/16'' gap on both sides of rods then its the smaller 2'' core also make sure u get the correct # of tube rows as i think its 43 or so not smaller tighter closer together type core tubes as they are wrong vendor and look noticibely different if u know what u are looking at.

I got some extras and did u ask me about idler arm?

i have seen it installed that way but not on any cars i had or worked on as you would have to cut out trunk mat and i have seen original trunk mats cut out around the antenna mount strap and clamp area but not very often. as the strap would have to be twisted flat to trunk floor and drill hole and it looks more hacked up when done.

Also dont know how many shelby dealers got the rear shelby  antenna install template as they are very rare as long ago i got both a fastback and vert 69 shelby rear antenna template back in the 80s and havent seen any since then. I am sure the big shelby dealers used a template to install them correctly but some small dealers may have only had a couple cars and they just installed it the way they wanted as i have seen them mounted back to the rear too far and in or out farther on quarter especially on fastbacks that have a bigger area to install antenna vs the verts that have a bigger wider trunk lid. So for these reasons u have different mounting holes to use accordingly. I wonder if all 69 shelbys had the template in the trunk with the antenna when delivered new?

I recently made this pm300 mounting strap off 1 of my originals exactly made as i ran out of these and couldnt find the original type that was used in 69. All the  replacement types i found over the years had different size holes and spacing different and thinner or wider metal. The strap was usually installed on the bottom antenna wrap around clamp (with the flared out lip not flat type) and the single hole by itself strap end was screwed into the clamp so u could pick one of the adjustment holes used on the other end of the strap all depending on where and how the dealer installed the antenna and it can be different between fastback and convertibles since they have much different rear quarter panels. I have seen 69-70 shelby antennas dealer installed many different ways and  support strap screwed to the trunk floor and the side of rear wheelhouses but i think it was supposed to be screwed to the bottom wheelhouse hole where the white panduit strap goes for wiring harness and excess not used metal either cut off shortened or just bent over wrappped around the wheelhouse or tucked under trunk mat however the dealer pre-delivery guy wanted to as so few shelbys were sold at that dealer vs 69 mustangs. I only had a handfull of these straps made since so few 69 shelbys still have the pm300 antenna still in the car.
