He have it partly right. When the wheels were first issued the centers were glued and then press fitted into the rim . A problem developed on some that was cause for a recall. Many didn't get changed out however. The new and improved wheel had the center riveted in place to the rim.

The rivets were one of many things they tried. The bigger issue was the chamfer on the lug holes and lug nut engagement. Several dealers reported wheels coming off.

Some reproduction lugnuts are made out of stainless steel to eliminate the tendency for the chrome to crack on the steel lugnuts when putting torque on them. If you use lugnuts made out of stainless steel you have to continually check them because they have a tendency to loosen up.
