Just wondering what my ammeter on my 67 gt 350 should be reading at an idle with no accessories on. Also does it matter which terminal the black and red wire are attached to on the back of the guage.

Yes it makes a difference which wires are connected to which terminals. If you hook it up wrong the gauge will not be hurt but instead of showing charging when the car is running it will show discharging if connected wrong.

That seems high . It will read similar if charging a very low battery and then it comes back down once it is charged . Make sure the battery is good and holds a charge . Easy to start and turns the engine freely would eliminate that possibility. It may be a faulty regulator. You can unplug and take it to your local alternator starter rebuilder shop or some auto parts store can check it. you can substitute another and see if it changes .Be sure ground wire is attached to the regulator and connections cleaned.  The least likely culprit IMO is the gauge.
