I typically find them P/O . I have seen only a few that were olive drab and believe those were anomalous.

The original poster was asking about an "early" car but what about a car built in April of '66?

AMK doesn't seem to offer any and NPD offers 3 versions, two different styles are listed: "Dual Lock Tang" and "Saw tooth" .

The owner would reference what was on the car - BUT they were already removed when he got the car!

Believe the OP was referring to "early 1966" in reference to the date the car may have been completed at San Jose and not "early 1966 production"

Both of your cars would have had the post style finished in phosphate and oil. Change took place prior to either cars build at San Jose

The two choices offered are "dual tang" and "saw tooth". 

As his are missing - which would be the more correct purchase?

My 9/65 San Jose car (not a Shelby) had the dual tang and appeared to be P&O finish.

To be completely correct neither is exactly like the ones I just removed from a Spring 66 San Jose example. Good thing is that once installed you will really not see much other than the head from the interior side and maybe the tip (1/4" - 3/8") on the engine compartment side

Here is a close up of one I just took out for the picture no cut or tang at the tip as shown in the top example you posted. Only two very slight bumps. You may be able to see it right at the seam shown in the picture at about firewall depth

I have found the dual tang painted flat black on 65's.

OK, so over the weekend they found two firewall pad "pins" in a bag of assorted fasteners from the car. 

They are like the ones Jeff posted and they do seem to be painted black like Charles has seen on '65's.

haven't gotten to test mine yet with paint stripper to confirm mine are painted rather than P&O) as mentioned earlier.  Maybe tomorrow

I picked up a set (7) of pins that I believe to be originals. They are black. They seem to be in very good condition. I would be willing to part with them if someone needs them.
