There were lots of great DJs in many markets. You had the morning & afternoon drive times for the most popular ones. You had the old pros who braved the scorn of their sponsors by playing that rock & roll noise.

One memorable event in Miamiland was when Don Cox or Cox on the radio As he was known played "Smugglers Blues" over and over again.  The whole State of FL was rolling on the floor laughing. Think it cost him his job

Goring up in SoCal, we had the top jocks and the original Drake-Chenault "Boss Radio" format.  They were the radio-whisperers (more like "yellers") that were hired to rescue ailing stations across the county. 

The Real Don Steele, Charlie Tuna, Robert W. Morgan, and the rest were legends.

The day I won a collection of Top 30 records from a KHJ call-in contest (AND Robert W. Morgan said my whole name on the radio!) I was suddenly (and for that day only) the coolest kid in my school.
