KR Trunk questions

Are the inside panels (rear wheel wells) supposed to be left just body-colored paint, or is there a protector of some sort in front of the painted surface?

Also, I found this cardboard piece laying loose in the trunk (the car is new to me). Does it go to anything or??

There are two taillight protectors and the piece pictured above. It fits in the left hand well to keep the trunk mat level. It is black cardboard unpainted

Your picture shows the bottom side upward

The inside of the trunk is painted body color
