I have an RUG-S here and it should be from a 68 Shelby GT500 maybe someone here has informations about it? Best regards Kent


partial vin is: 8R102239 4 Speed Toploader RUG-S

Interesting, but the R would indicate San Jose and they didnt build 428s in 1968

Plus the unit number 102239 is too low to be a Shelby

I am guessing that you are not interpreting that correctly?

Is the 102239 number on the tag or stamped into the casting?

Its on the ear of the tranny where it should be yes I also was wondering but maybe someone here has an idea.

David Kee has it only listed as a '68 GT500 transmission.

You are presuming that the stamped in vehicle ID is factory stamped and it may not be.

At one time 30 or 40 years ago someone wrote an article on how to protect the parts in your vehicle from theft and one of the suggestions was to stamp your vehicle ID into the transmission.

Believe you will find some 428CJ 4 speed Mustangs were built during 1968 production at San Jose that had RUG S transmissions installed in them. The challenge, at this point for me, is that the sequential number 102239 would put this too early for a Cobra Jet built later in the production year. 8R102239 would make this from a very very early car at San Jose. Of course without the Ford data used in a Marti report we would not know if 8R102239 was built around the time scheduled or delayed for some reason. Have records of some early cars being delayed by months at San Jose

There are other applications (different years) that also used the RUG S based on the pictures and information received

I thought that also. All I can do is refer to Key's list since I have no other data.

I think that it is for both 67 & 68 GT500.

The RUG-S and RUG-S1 for the 67 GT500 have different casting # than an RUG-S for the 68 1/2 Cobra Jets and the 68 GT500 and the later build 68 1/2 CJ Mustangs recieved the RUG-AE like the GT500KR also.

What I want to say is that the tranny should be definitely a early 68 only application on a CJ or a GT500

I just sold it as I dont need it anymore so this story has ended.
