I know that a man by the name of Nagel owned 5R001  in 1984. I was a judge at the 1984 mustang nationals in Dallas Texas. I remember seeing him with the car at the show I asked him when the show was over if he would give me a ride in it , he said sure no problem ,so when the show was over he asked me if I would like to drive the car back to his warehouse because he had trailered a 427 cobra there earlier and needed someone to drive 5R001 back to his warehouse .I guess whoever helped him get the cars to the show was not available. so I was in the right place at the right time .that was the highlight of my life driving this car  on the highway to the other side of Dallas. to this day I still can't believe I did that .when we got to his warehouse it was full of Shelbys, there was a GT 40 in the corner of the warehouse that was in pieces and he said that it was Mario Andretti's car .he also had numerous other Shelby's ,what an incredible day  .i have often wondered where he and his cars are now . It's like he disappeared with his cars . Nobody seems to know anything . Just curios . I would like to visit him someday and see the famous GT350 that I once drove

Around that same time, our local Mustang club, The North Texas Mustang Club, was holding outdoor shows at the large UT Arlington parking lot.  At the fall meet, I was driving my 1969 coupe over and was stopped at a light above a freeway cloverleaf.  I started hearing a LOUD car.  I looked down and spotted some Shelby stripes exiting onto the clover leaf.  It was early morning so the lane next to me was empty.  Up drove Rick in R001.  He was driving.  He had, I assume his kids, in the car.  They had helmets on.  Rick waved, the light changed and we motored on to the show.

Is 5R001 replacing the "missing" Daytona Coupe as the holy grail??? I crewed on 001 while Larry Zane owned it while Rick Titus was driving it.

Would consider 5R002 or 5S003 more significant.  5S003 was supposed to receive the 001 number as it originally had SFM5001 written on the cowl.

We were fortunate to have 5S003 at our local concours outside of Houston a few years ago.  Incredible piece of history.  Also quite possibly the loudest Mustang exhaust that I've ever heard, sounded like a top fuel dragster.

What ended up as 001 had the most race history and championship. 003 was the first built and was a street car and when the cowl photo showed up with 001 it was converted to an R Model in the late 70s - converted back to street car now if I remember correctly. 002 was the first R Model finished and the one Ken Miles drove in the first race - if I remember correctly, it served as the factory test mule.
The same serial number confusion can be laid onto the Shogun project done by Chuck Beck & Rick Titus. After the yellow prototype which never got a serial number Chuck's blue shop/demo was the first built but carries 002. The second built was a red one purchased by a guy in San Francisco - he paid extra to have the 001 number. The 3rd car built was Jay Leno's silver car. He refers to it as the first car. While it was the first customer car delivered it was the 3rd built.
