Attaching Lower Grille

Getting ready to re-attach my lower grille after repaint and installing the new lower grille protective strip.  The Assembly Manual shows what appears to be screws with washers, but gives no specifications on size and style(phillips or flat head).  My AMK kit has only bolts, J-nuts, and large head rivets.  What would be correct for a car #2339.

Thanks,

I believe by then they were using the rivets to hold those in.

Was your original missing (no evidence of how it was)?  If you have your original Front nose/License plate support you should see the holes from previously - they will be on the rear vertical surface.

See attached, arrows pointing to rivets, note each is a different direction on the installation of the rivet.  Branda book illustration (page 3) shows them installed from the front which would be easier.

Edit: another photo of a car with lower grille riveted from the front - not car 97 that is just part of the file name to reference the image number.

Large head black anodized rivets like used on the front nose fiberglass was very typical for that later production car to secure the lower grill.

Thanks JD and Bob.

Yes, it is the original support.

Was held on by large head rivets, but the Assembly Manual is confused me.

Just to be clear - early cars used threaded fasteners to hold the grilles in place, where they attached to the Nose Support/License Plate support on both the 1-piece and the 2-piece.  Will look for some images and post them - found and posted.

The third image below looks to be what is illustrated in the Branda issued '67 Shelby Assembly Manual page 3.  The change to using the large head rivets (and numerous other variations) doesn't seem to have been documented in drawings.

(I think that in the early stages there were also some variances based on workers doing the build)

JD, thanks for the extra pictures.  The Branda book is lacking in many ways.

Hey - looking to mount my lower grille. It appears that the large top corner holes are there for the two bolts located in the same area. Please see the picture.

Is that correct?

Thanks!

I would say - YES.

Are there some closer to the "center" as well?

Perfect!! Now, it makes even more sense that the rivet head would be in the back side, as she larger mesh area is on the back side the the brace. And, it all makes for a cleaner look.

Thanks JD!!
