GT500KR a/c vent disassembly

I am in a fight with the round a/c vents that sit under dash on drivers and passengers side.I have them out and on the bench but can't separate the front "cap" which has the angled vents in it and is used to turn and control air direction, from the housing.I believe a plastic retaining sleeve sits between the 2 pieces.I can't get it to release/separate.I've thought about making up a piece that sits inside the housing and across the back part of the vent structure and giving it some wally with a hammer.Is there a better way?

shouldn't take much of a whallop but yes that is the way to get them out. Good news is West Coast Cougars has replacement plastic retainers. Yours will likely break
