This 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350 was sold new at Universal Motors in Akron, Ohio, and was modified for drag racing in the 1970s while with its original owner, with whom it remained until 1991. A cosmetic refurbishment in 1990 consisted of a repaint in white with blue Le Mans stripes as well as replacement of the front fenders and driver's door, and the car subsequently spent time with owners in Ohio and California. Power is from a replacement 289ci HiPo V8 from another 1966 GT350, which was fitted in 2018 and features a reproduction exhaust system. Additional work performed three years ago included refinishing of the frame, floor pans, engine compartment, and rear end components. Equipment consists of a four-speed manual transmission, front disc brakes, 14″ alloy wheels, hood pins, rear brake cooling ducts, racing-style lap belts, a Sport Deck rear seat, and a dash-mounted tachometer. This GT350 was acquired by the selling dealer in 2019 and is now offered in New York with an owner's manual, period photographs, SAAC information, judging sheets from the 2018 SAAC National Convention, service records, Shelby American sales documents, and a clean California title.

The car was refinished in its original white with blue Le Mans stripes following replacement of the front fenders, driver's door, and weatherstripping in 1990. An email from SAAC specialist Tony Conover with comments regarding the quarter panels, doors, and fenders is pictured in the gallery below. Exterior details include fixed rear quarter windows, a hood scoop and hold-down pins, and fiberglass rear brake cooling ducts on the quarter panels.

Shelby 10-spoke alloy wheels wear period-style 6.95-14 Goodyear Blue Streak tires. Shelby chassis modifications included revised front suspension geometry, Kelsey-Hayes front disc brakes, and larger rear brake drums when compared to the standard Mustang.

The 2+2 cockpit features low-backed bucket seats upholstered in black vinyl along with a matching Sport Deck fold-down rear seat, door panels, dash pad, and carpets. Additional equipment includes latch-and-link front lap belts as well as a radio blank panel.

The three-spoke steering wheel frames a central 140-mph speedometer flanked by gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, amperage, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 22k miles, 100 of which have been driven by the selling dealer. The speedometer gears and cable were replaced in 2018, and total mileage is unknown. A Cobra-branded tachometer with an adjustable redline needle is mounted atop the dash pad.

The replacement 289ci HiPo V8 was sourced from Orlando Mustang in Osteen, Florida in 2017, and was originally fitted in another 1966 GT350 according to an email from Shelby registrar Howard Pardee in the gallery. The engine was installed in 2018 along with a new driveshaft and fuel lines. The inner fenders were modified for header clearance in the 1970s, and a replacement factory-style exhaust system was fitted in 2015.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. A 2018 refurbishment of the chassis and suspension included sandblasting and painting the frame, floor pans, suspension, and engine compartment as well as powder-coating the rear end, backing plates, traction bars, and additional components.

The car comes with invoices and shipping receipts from Shelby American, Inc. in addition to registration cards, service records, period photos, an owner's manual, and serial number letters from the Shelby American Automobile Club. Judging sheets from the 2018 SAAC National Convention are also shown in the gallery.

Great comments in that auction, especially by @HardTravelin, the original owner.
