This is from an older thread that disappeared when forum 1.0 crashed, thought I'd repost for those who haven't seen it. Also still posted on the Concours Mustang forum.

Other than service parts, we all know there was no HiPo 289 engine for 1968. But based on this fuel pump (and a few other parts), it appears Ford initially had plans to produce it for the Mustang.

Ford part number C8ZZ-9350-A, Carter number 4543S. It has dual springs and appears to be exactly like the 66-67 HiPo C6ZZ-9350-A, Carter 4201S unit, with one exception...it has the larger 3/8" inlet. Tim Lea, Bob Mannel, and Fred Ballard were instrumental in helping identify this. Below is a copy of the listing from Tim's 68 specific MPC, as you can see it shows the application as "F Special (with 4/B carb.)...8...289", a car that was never built. The assumption is with the car on the drawing board Ford had to develop this pump to accommodate the larger 3/8" fuel line for 1968 since the 4201S had a smaller 5/16" inlet.

Yes, it does according to Bob Mannel's SBF book.

I wonder if this is the fuel pump that would have been used on the 1968 302 Tunnel Port street engine that never materialized.

I would say it "might" have been made "initially" for the "302 hipo" that was actually planned before the Tunnel Port . I have one of these pumps that was on a "street Tunnel Port" engine I had. The race engines had a "C8FE" stamped racing pump , similar to a Boss 302 pump. I have one of those as well.

What is the date stamped on the pump?   Curious since it doesn't have the CARbureTER logo.

Date code is January 22, 1969. I spoke with Bob Mannel at length about this pump and asked him about that. He said once Carter got the order from Ford in their system they would keep producing it until Ford told them to stop. I've personally only seen one other 4543S pump, it also had a 22A9A date stamp.

You are right Dave. Ford was famous for R/B (replaced by) xxxxxxxx. The "newest design" part was always deemed the best. As parts are rebuilt some components are often switched and the 3/8ths inlets are "lost". Mine is in tact but used. One of these days I'll look at the date code for you.

Forgot to post this reference from the 1968 Autolite Reference Catalog...

Perfect Dave! As you show it is "special 4 barrel" . The Tunnel Port was "to be" a dual 4 barrel. No 4 barrel was planned for the Tunnel Port despite a manifold actually being made.

As of June of 1967, a '68 289 Hipo was still set for release when this information was published. Guess it was canceled shortly after by the X!

Wasn't it referred to in some places as a 302hp?
