1969 A/T center console question

Since I received the car in pieces I am not sure if there is something wrong, or if I am doing something wrong. I have mounted the base of the shifter mech to the tunnel. I have the console base in place. Here is where my problem starts. If I put the console insert in place, the shifter bezel will not fit in the opening. If I mount the bezel, the insert will not fit over the bezel.  Does the Shelby take a different bezel than the regular mustang.  OR, am I doing some form of bone head assembly, that someone will be kind enough to talk me through the correct procedure.  Bezel P/N is C9ZA-7E034-C

So with the shifter and bezel mounted the insert should slide over it. Did you take the shifter out of park and shift down to around first or second so you can "slide" the insert over it(no different than a regular Mustang with an automatic console insert).

Pictures attached.  With the insert on the Bezel, the insert does not fit over the bezel, leaving a gap. due to the size of the bezel, there is no way it will fit into the insert, if the insert is put on over the base plate. And if you look at the opening (picture) you can see that the insert by itself obscures the mounting bosses of he bezel.  Do I have he wrong base and bezel?

Picture of my Mach 1 shifter. I think without the carpet and backing the console is sitting much lower than it will be on final install.

Before I'd mount the insert I'd have the console mounted to the tunnel(floor) in the correct position in the old screw holes before trying to mount anything. Are there any screws in the console to the floor? Your pics show no screws mounted.  Original floors with the original screw holes? BTW I have mounted many consoles in 69-70 Mustangs over the decades most being 4 speeds but don't recall if there was a problem with the insert going in place with the shifter mounted completely to the floor. In the pic with the gap can you measure the top of the console to the bottom of the dash where the console goes under the dash so I can compare the gap to the gap on my car? You can also put the woodgrain radio bezel on the dash and compare the gauge over lap on the bezel compared to other pics like Pete's above as a reference on console height.

Most of the holes for the console base were welded up at the body shop.  You may have noticed that I am in the process of relocating the holes before I mounted the base.  I figured that I if I have the shift mech in place, I could get a more accurate mounting of the console.  This is when I discovered the clearance (or lack there of) issues.  From the bottom of the dash frame to the top of the console base, it measures 1 1/2" - and that is WITHOUT carpet or underlayment in place

That could be your problem. I can get some measurements off of my car in the next couple of days and my car has the original floors and console holes in it. I can also check out my Mach1's console also.

got some pics today. approximate gap from the metal dash to top of the console is about 20 MM. I took a pic in inches and the angle is skewed.
