KR - Battery tray and vacuum canister arrangement

As long as I have owned my KR (auto with AC), the large vacuum canister (the big "bean can") under battery tray has been barely in place and secured thru various means. I'm trying to replace the battery tray and rehab the canister but can't figure how the large canister is SUPPOSED to fit in relation to the battery tray supports. They appear to want to occupy the same space.

On a side note, there is a small vacuum canister fitted through the fender well in the same area but has no connections. I assume this was not used in lieu of the bigger canister and is just to fill the whole in the fender well. Am I correct?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Ted

On an AC car there are two vacuum canisters.

One is mounted under the right hood hinge outside your the engine compartment. That is for the AC functions.

A second canister is mounted in front of the right wheel, under the battery, on the exterior side of the battery apron.

The easiest way to distinguish between the two canisters is by the vacuum hose nipples.

You can see both canisters in this photo

One behind the wheel, one in front

So this big 7" long rascal I have doesn't belong. (picture below is similar to what I have but incorrect). That makes sense. I guess the original for the tilt-a-way must have gone bad years ago and got replaced with what was in the parts room at the time. Explains why it never fit right. Duh ! The original is still in place but with no nipple/check valve fitting. Am I correct that if the canister itself is good the nipple/check valve can be replaced?

Thanks Pete

The can you pictured is not correct

The valve is integral to both canisters, so they are replaced as one

You are VERY correct about the pictured tank being wrong. That's just an example of what I had that I couldn't make fit. I'll edit that post to make that clear for future ref.  I pulled the one in the fender well under the battery and its toast (photo below). Any recommendations of good replacements?

The valve should have two nipples

NPD sells a replacement
