Is this the correct s-tube for a 68KR it don't seem to want to match up exactly with the breather snout. It's the one that was on it but it does not want to fit that well.

Regular cj  since KR having unique snorkel had a modified s-tube for adjustment having 3 top screw holes and 3 bottom cutouts.

FWIW, I believe KRs share the same S tube as the XR7-G 390 non-Hertz Cougar also.

Royce may chime in and correct me if I'm mistaken.

Just to be clear the CJ and CJ/KR use the same S tube but KR had slots/holes added. Can easily convert regular CJ to CJ/KR. Ford did actually service the KR version, had a NOS one once. Early KRs modified tubes at AO Smith

Phillip.

I don't think so and here's why. The Shelby KR and the non - Hertz Cougar XR7-G both had snorkles extended to clear the Shelby supplied Le Mans style valve covers. The snorkle on the XR7-G was not the same as the Shelby, although similar. The first segment that bolts to the air cleaner base is different, because the 428CJ ram air cleaner base has a different hole spacing for the two fasteners than the 390GT base on the Cougar has.

The Cougar XR7-G snorkle has a 390GT lower fitting, which is a different size than the opening for a 428CJ. So both ends of the XR7-G snorkle are different than the Shelby, as well as the S tube being different.

The Shelby drawing for the KR S-tube (three holes and three notches) shows an S8MS part number which we all know is 1968 Shelby.  What is interesting is that there is a hand written note on the drawing saying "was S8WS" which is 1968 Cougar Shelby or XR7-G.  Hmmm.

Thanks Royce and Scott -

Obviously, this has been something I've had trouble pinning down.

I needed an S tube for my G, and bought one from Hank Huisman at Carlisle one year after explaining to him what I was looking for.

It works, but I've wondered what exactly was used originally.

There may or may not be a  physical difference from a regular 390GT S tube. The 428CJ S tube is a different diameter at the top which would explain the difference on the Shelby drawing. I believe at the very least the notch for the screw at the bottom has to be cut in a different location because of the longer snorkle on each of these cars.

The non - Hertz X code and S code XR7-G's both used the same AO Smith / Shelby Automotive installed snorkle and S tube. I have owned originals but never bothered to measure them unfortunately.

Royce,

Are you saying the Cougars used the KR snorkel?

Scott

Royce Peterson

Yes - maybe - if they were one of the 14 (Ultra rare!) 428CJ XR7-G's.

No if they were one of the 62 X code XR7-G's or one of the 120 non - Hertz S code 390 XR7-G's. The 390 Snorkle used on the non - Hertz XR7-G's will not bolt to a 428CJ air cleaner base nor will a 428CJ S tube fit to the other end.

I have to throw the maybe in there because (so far as I know) none of the known cars has its original snorkle and S tube intact. I doubt AO Smith / Shelby would have designed a different one when they already had one that was being used on thousands of Shelby GT500KR's that would fit and function perfectly. I have seen all the known engineering drawings and I own the production planning documents for the XR7-G and there is no mention of anything regarding the 428CJ at all.
