Crank damper

67 GT350 4-speed thermactor car #2751

My crank damper looks like the outer ring has slipped a few degrees.  I checked it for TDC today and I think it is about 5 degrees off.  So I have located a replacement - a correct original HiPo C3 damper.  However, on checking back to mine on the car, it looks like I've currently got a service replacement C8 damper!!  It's certainly been on the car since 1983...  Hopefully the attached picture is clear enough.

It is date coded B7 which I assume is February 67.  The engine assembly date was 7E9W (May 67?) and the vehicle assembly date was 25th May '67 which all chimes ok.

Did the factory ever use the 'stepped' style dampers on HiPo motors, or is this really a replacement?

ps - I think the drill holes you see on the circumference were added when I had the engine balanced a few years back.

The late 67 GT 350 cars did not use the common hipo damper. They used a 68 style damper but it has a 67 part number. Your damper looks correct to me for a 5/25/67 build date.

Were any of the very late 289 hipo blocks c8 blocks?

I thought all the 67 timing covers had a cast-in timing pointer; the photo looks like the late 68 & up...

At a guess - since this has the '68-style HiPo damper it has to have the '68-style timing pointer.  I could be wrong...  I've been wrong before... Twice!  ;)

       Dave are you saying the "hub" has a C7ZE casting number?
Thank you for enlightening me on the use of the "stepped" balancer. I have only worked on/ seen the beveled version on '67 350s. I obviously haven't seen them "all" LOL

Hi Randy,
The non beveled version has a C7 part number. This part was also used on the GT 350 cars with AC. The reason for the use on the AC cars is that the lower AC pulley won't fit into the earlier balancer.

 Jim Cowles has a C5OE that is "relieved" for use with A/C. I have seen a couple of these in the past. I have the C7ZE noted in my list of balancer casting numbers but no"details" associated to it. I will add the details.

Have you looked at the front casting number and is it the modified C5OE to C7ZE ?
Does your car have A/C?
