tilt solenoid

The solenoid on my tilt steering gets hot, does this indicate it is bad or could the relay have a role in this issue? I tested based on Pete's web page and it clicks indicating it still works.

If it gets hot it is working properly. If it doesn't get hot I would worry.

I have seen them where the coil inside the solenoid works-so it clicks and gets hot-but the points inside are bad and do not make a connection to complete the circuit. I have also seen where the terminals are riveted on that there is no continuity between the terminal(s) and the rivet to the internal parts. Corrosion hides in sneaky places sometimes! Make sure you are getting power out of the solenoid to the relay.

It seams pretty warm, almost too hot to touch. Not much of an expert on electrical but a little little embarrassing to pop your hood locks and use a screw driver to start your car :)

A little confused by your posts.  Is this problem with the tilt wheel vacuum solenoid or with the starter solenoid?

If I'm not mistaken, the car will not start with the steering column in the tilted away position. You have to bring it down into the driving position. Are you able to start your car, with the steering column in the tilted away position, by jumping the starter solenoid?

Does the tilt away function work at all?

Can you get the steering column to tilt away by manually pulling on the cable? You'll probably want to remove the clevis pin first.

You may be able to get the steering column to tilt away by pushing down slightly on the steering wheel when you open the door. That takes some of the stress off the tilt away lock, allowing the solenoid to function.

I've had many 68s with tilt and all eventually have the no starting problem. The switch inside the vacuum housing fails open. Maybe was designed to fail that way. Tired to take that assembly apart once to see this switch but its riveted and I ended up ruining it. I would unplug the two connector plug from the switch and make a jumper to plug on. Problem would be that the engine will start with the wheel in the tilt-away position.

In 67 there was a different setup using a door jamb type switch that was accessible on the column if needed to be replaced. The 68 collapsible column must have forced the change.
