This 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 is one of the first 50 examples built and was completed at the original Shelby headquarters in Venice, California before production of the model shifted to a facility near Los Angeles International Airport. SFM5S048 was originally ordered from a Chicago dealer by a Minneapolis SCCA member, who attempted to drive it home to Minnesota after taking delivery but suffered an engine failure along the way that required the warranty installation of a new engine. The first owner proceeded to campaign the car in road-racing competition until selling it in 1966 to the second owner, who continued racing it while making several R-model-style updates. The car remained with its third owner for 20 years before being acquired in 1988 by its fourth owner, who had it for 12 years. Finished in Wimbledon White with blue Le Mans stripes, the car retains its warranty-replacement 289ci HiPo V8, which is paired with a Borg-Warner T10 four-speed manual transmission and a Detroit Locker differential. Early modifications include cylinder-head upgrades, an R-style front fascia, larger brake-cooling ducts, a larger radiator, plexiglass rear quarter windows, and a 1966 instrument cluster, while recent additions include an R-style fuel tank and MSD ignition. Acquired by the seller in July 2019, this GT350 is now offered in Maui, Hawaii with historical documents, photos from its racing career, a collection of parts, owner's manuals, and a clean Montana title in the seller's name.

I believe it is unrestored but with many upgrades done over the years.

I just found out that the previous owner Steve Forristall passed away. I dealt with him for just a few days and it was a very good experience. RIP.

Yes, mostly original.  I'm guessing the floor pans were touched up with spray can red-oxide sometime in the past.  Most likely has black batch primer under there.

Looks like everything is reverse-able, but with so much race history, probably should remain as it is.

The great thing is you can drive this car like you stole it...without worrying about it.  ;D

It will be interesting to see what a car with bumps and bruises and Replacement motor , not to mention additional "character" will bring.

Most of these cars were run hard and put away wet, that's what they were designed for... and makes them very special !  They were not designed to sit in the corner looking good, but rather wring out as much power, and smiles as a young man could have. This owner is just up front about it, most are not.

Well put.

+1, regarding the desire to keep as is. I bet it would be a ton of fun to drive!!
Nothing beats a classic!

It's nice to see it doesn't pop out of gear like so many T10's do. I guess that was fixed by a PO?

It isn't a big deal to me but those aren't tri-y headers. I am wondering if they are the Belanger road race headers? They look like 2" primary tubes?

Is it always foggy in the mountains in the morning in Hawaii?

I looked at this car when Steve had it in Houston. Very solid and sorted track car. Would be proud to own it!

Sounds nice on the road. Engine pulls well.

The ad says, "head modifications". I am wondering if it has the GT40 heads?

Heads and headers were addressed by a previous owner in the comments section of the auction.
