4 speed transmission in a 1966 shelby

Hi Guys in a 1966 shelby 4 speed car did they have a close ratio top loader like the K code has and were the vin stamped as well this shelby is a late 66 model

A later '66 would have had a cast iron main case and tailshaft housing. Close ratio gears, but a T10, not a toploader. Also no VIN stamping.

...found 6S1348 after a full year of searching. It was in a garage I passed every day on the way to work. I looked at cars in front yards, back yards, storage garages, in fields, and under trees. I found a 65 that had hit a tree and was bent all the way to the back...

In getting these in for rebuild Ive seen alloy T10s to around serial number 1000  or so. Ive never been able to document an original untouched car that came from SA with a cast iron Tailshaft.  Talking to some of the SA  people years back they knew there was an issue and they thought the tails were replaced by the dealers at no charge if they broke. Ive weld repaired many especially the longer T10L  versions.  On another note.  Ive got SA catalogs showing the T10M  with cast iron tails  being sold over the counter

Did they change over at some point to all iron cases during 1966 production.

    My experience is the same as Jim's. The switch was made around vin 1,000 but there is some back and forth overlap. '66 production units were all aluminum or all iron. none were half and half . The only cars to have the half and half transmissions were the '67 T/A coupes. This was based on the amount of tailshaft housing failure in race conditions in previous years. NO other production SAI vehicle used that transmission.  The Transmission was also used for the '68 T/A season but there were no "customer cars" sold that year.  "I" was told the original P.O. was for 100 half and half transmissions. The rest not used in race cars were sold out of the catalog as Jim mentioned until all were gone. I was also told that "warranty" repairs were only authorized to use the cast iron tailshaft housing when a repair was needed. This came from the late Ray Wolfe . One of his titles was Service Manager at High Performance Motors when it was operating. When I used to buy parts from him in the late '60s and 70's he had about ten NOS half and half T-10s for sale.

There were no "later" 1966 4 speed cars manufactured at SAI. Last number 4 speed is 6S612.

Interesting, 1114 has an aluminum case T-10 with a cast iron tailshaft.  It sounds like the tailshaft was probably switched out based on Jim & Randy's comments above.  Thanks to Joe Bolus, it has been reunited with the car.

Actually, 4-speed 66 GT350's were produced throughout 66 production, you might be thinking of factory 4-speed Hertz cars...

More interesting, 1134 has an aluminum case T-10 and a cast iron tailshaft.  It would be nice to know if more cars in this range have the same setup.  Coincidence or pattern?
