Looking for information on the mounting location from a March 66 built Shelby Hertz with Autolite carb. Most pictures I have seen show the coil mounted on the on the passenger side. It looks like there is more room to install in on the driver's side and then it would not have such tight clearance with the bypass water hose. Thoughts?

It depends on if you want to do it it the factory way which is on the passenger side head or a way that you think looks better mounted on the driver side. It is your car so you can do it which every way you want. If concerned about historical accuracy the passenger side is what is expected.

Passenger side. Its not about what makes sense to us 50 years later its what the engineers figured out they wanted back then. Allot of owners did relocate the coil once they started making modifications since it made more sense to them - more room less of a pain to reinstall in the original location. Consider that on the drivers side you had AC and PS to mount there on A and C code Mustangs (without Thermactor) so it likely easier on everyone to just mount it in that location since they did for those applications.

+2 Pass side if you want to score points. Like Bob said it's yours mount it where you want. Mine is over by the battery tray , off of the engine! I'm a full 180* off of concours. My coil isn't even black , it's red.

When did Ford change from driver's side to passenger side mounting location?

Thanks,
Steve

Good question. Might have been back when the generators were used on small blocks or before that

Nope checked that and the coils were on the passenger side intake like 66 smog 289's

Would it be safe to say that all the 1965-66 GT350's had their coil on the passenger side? (Allowing for a possible oddball exception that might pop up.)

Thanks,
Steve
