The original to the car AC compressor will be a York aluminum unit with a C8ZX-2875A metal stamped on the FOMOCO tag. Yes they can be rebuilt and also replacements can be rebuilt. I would not spend the money to rebuild a incorrect for 68 Shelby cast iron Tecumseh compressor if that is what you have now. Antique Auto Air or one of their companies does the rebuilds.

Besides the C8ZX tag. the correct compressor has casting characteristics that differ from other York aluminum compressors.

Thanks for info, I do have C8ZX-2875A compressor, No. Y206430J.
I should consider rebuilding this one?

Many thx—-George

Yes, but DO NOT give that compressor to a rebuilder with your tag; carefully REMOVE THE TAG.  It is secured by two tiny nuts that thread onto tiny studs.  Specify that they CANNOT switch compressor cores on you!  Take closeup photos of all casting characteristics and document your compressor; and tell them you have done so.  Specify that they cannot put any of their own ID markings on the rebuild.

My nut driver set happened to have the correct size socket--size not available right now-sorry.  Use a thin layer of tape, or plastic (sandwich baggie) around/over the nut so your socket does not make a witness mark on that tag surface.

Oh, and specify that all original hardware (fasteners) be re-used--no replacements--because of markings and type.

Thanks so much for this info, would have never thought that. Do you have a reputable contact that can do the rebuild? If so can you provide a phone number or website?
The tag appeared to be red as new but has worn much of the paint off, would you recommend repainting?

Many thanks —George

I wouldn't recommend trying to repaint details on the tag--I think it is originally a screen printing process??

Other than what has been suggested, no, I don't have a rebuilder recommendation.  I would be trying to locate a very seasoned a/c mechanic/shop that has experience with this type of vintage compressor, who knows what parts to source.  Avoid rookies.
