I thought it was a good deal also. I really do t have any knowledge of cobras, but a 427 block is quite a Beautiful engine. I figured someone here knows the ins and outside of these cars and would know if the engine was legit or not.

Jimmy since you asked you shall receive. What I could see from the pictures was a top end that did not belong if you were going to build a correct 427. For starters the carb appears to be a later dual feed attached to an EDELBROCK intake manifold that is attached to a set of 1964 390 cylinder heads. Missing is a correct distributor, air cleaner. This would alter the price of the engine substantially, after seeing the outside I would be suspect that the correct LE MANS rods and steel crank with the famous dollar sign might be missing as well. Do your do diligence before parting with a fist full of Benjamins... Good Luck

 The port sizes are very similar between the low riser and the early 390 heads. All low riser heads that I have seen over the last 45 years have been a c3 part number, Doesn't mean that a c4 head exists just typically not. High risers have both a c3 and a c4 part number but never seen a low riser according to much smarter, much older, race guys.

CSX 3100 cars are typically 427 2x4 low risers. The production dates on those engines are pretty much a guess and since those are technically '65 model year cars they should have at least second half of 64 casting dates.

What I'm saying is that PROBABLY the casting dates are more important to calling it a 427 Cobra engine.

I've tried to have that discussion with Ned but his lack of "coming forward" with specific info like that "suggests" that the engine dates on those installed originally in the 3100 cars is unknown or undocumented?


I'm not sure why Ford cast 390 heads and 427 heads when they are essentially interchangeable? I'm sure there was a reason but even 390 heads can be machined for 427 valves so that right there is a question?

Maybe "engineering" just had not come to that conclusion as of yet since 1965 seems to change the 427 somewhat as if a new team came in and revised things in the foundry?

I have a shelby document that says C4AE-6090-H heads came on 1966 Cobra 427 CSX 3101-3199
I have had a couple sets of these all came on motors from H&M both were side oilers, the doc comes from www.nvsaac.com/shelbyparts/heads.htm
It also has the listed for 1965 cobra 427 CSX 3001-3053 cast iron 427 low rise

Those 64 heads are in every 4v Galaxie and early truck seemingly at every junk yard, they sell for about 150 bucks a pair. The 1963 castings sell for 10-15 times that amount. They both are great performers, and most of the racers call them POOR mans COBRA heads.

I have never saw a set of the 427 Low Riser heads.

     As I recall, cast surface, not machined.
