98SVT - was 06GT

Sounds like even after converting it to an easy to drive automatic it still wasn't fun to drive so off to the auction it goes.

I am thinking most mostly stock cars from the 50's aren't fun to drive.

Michael,

I agree that most of the '50s cars were still pretty archaic.

But, I had a sweet low mile original '57 T-Bird E-model (twin-fours...270 hp) with a three-speed manual.  Surprised me at how well it drove, how powerful it was, and how much fun it was.

I owned an all-stock '60 Vette (twin-fours 270 hp) at the same time as the T-Bird, and the 'Bird was a bit quicker out of the hole and up to around 60 mph, even though the Vette had 3.73 gears and a 4-speed.

On the highway, and in ride quality, the 'Bird was far more civilized to drive.  Went around corners pretty well, too.

My original 11,000 mile '62 T-Bird drove nicer, and was equally as luxurious, as an 18,000 original-mile '61 Cadillac I also owned.  Ford had it goin' on!

Of course, the GM class of '63: Vette, Riviera, Grand Prix, and others, evened the playing field.

Van, I believe you. There were a few gems.

And I love '56 birds.

Imagine caddie-ing this boat around a supermarket (or Sears) parking lot w a 'three-on-tree' and  four screaming 'Dennis the Menace's' wreaking havoc in the back?
Everyday fare for the moms of our generation. Impressive seamanship!
And that was before son #1 put a 'mystery shifter' in it!!

Only pix of my '57 Bird I can find right now.  I miss it.

Notice that the air scoop is functional.

Seems like that would be a pretty neat ride.
I guess the cars from the 50's vary all over the map (especially now, at 60+ years old).
My grandfather (not really a car guy) had bought a '58 Lincoln - back in the 80's. No one really knew why he decided to buy it ???
later, as life was winding down in the 90's, the car needed to be sold. This was a pretty nice car, 4-door, well-equipped... yep, worth very little $$
I considered buying it... but all of my uncles talked me out of it. I drove it once... seemed like "on center" for the steering was non-existent, must've had 60 degrees (total) of play.
That turned me off.
I can't say if that car had been mechanically "neglected" before he bought it, but it wasn't for me.

The Classic Motorsports (magazine) guys have a '59 Edsel Villager wagon, they seem to really like that one.

The front suspension in my 54 Vette was known as the widow maker. My 63 & 66 were not much better. My 85 was a pig with not enough HP to take use of the suspension advances. Early Camaros are far worse than Mustangs. They suffer from GMs built in understeer. They started designing them like that after the Corvair problems. In the eyes of plaintiffs attorneys If you spin a car it's a design fault. In the eyes of GMs attorneys if your car plows straight off the road it's your fault for going too fast.
Yes 60s Tbirds rode nice. In high school I took my mom's '61 over the hill to an away football game. With 4 couples crammed in the car we got the rockers to scrape in the turns.
