Early Hood's Undersides Painted White or Black?

Recent postings of early '65's for sale show undersides of the hoods painted what appears to be satin/semi-gloss black.  Searching my "archives" of books, articles, etc. show them mostly white.  Is there any credibility to the black undersides for the porthole hoods?

What time period are you identifying as "early"?

For the sake of discussion, the first 100 or so...Like the early style without the center re-inforcement and the later ones with it.  What caused my curiousity were the recent discussions about 077 and 110, both of which, as I recall, display black undersides.  (Currently, 110 doesn't have a correct porthole hood.)

40+ years ago I owned the original hood for 5S110 ( the scoop was sawed off to allow carburetors to "poke" through) and it was white on the underside. I grafted a scoop back on it ( crooked unfortunately) and sold it to a guy with a coupe. I never told him the heritage. Long gone by now.

Pics of 114, in '65 show white on the bottom.

Be careful going by the SFM number as the finished dates were all over the place.  For instance, 114 was finished on 4/26/65, yet 163 was finished on 4/23/65.  Also, 159 was finished the same day as 114.

Stan, considering your car was finished in March, I'd say white bottom would be acceptable.

Original underside of hood on 5S228 was painted white. It had porthole with chicken wire screen.

I was looking at one of the first 100 cars the other day which has a very nice early hood and the underside is white.

Martin,
Did the original hood on #228 have the extra rib in the middle.
Do you have any picture?

I looked at some old pictures I got from the previous owner of 5S277 and his pot hole hood had
the extra rib and was painted white. The car was bought by him in 1976 and restored in
1977.

I think I have some really old photos of 5S228 with the original hood up. Have to look in my scrap book and see if I can find a photo.

It's a good reference, but hard to know exactly in black/white photo if that is gray primer or white paint.  Regardless, we know that the white bottoms are something that was in practice after the move to LAX.
