1968 console removal

My wood trim is peeling on my console. Any tricks suggestions on removal and replace would be appreciated.

I'd be inclined to remove and disassemble the console to detach the center plate from the sides.  Use a heat gun to get the old decal off, clean off the old glue with solvent and install a new wood grain insert.

It's all self-explanatory once the console is out and you see how it's assembled, nothing complicated.  Be a good opportunity to address any other issues or improvements needed while it's out.

To remove the console from the car there are 2 screws in the bottom of the compartment under the arm rest. I have an automatic so I remove the shifter tee-handle and bezel and move the shifter to "1" position (to the rear). Console should slide back so you can disconnect gauges and wire to the light in the rear seat area. Never done a 4-speed but I would expect it to be similar.

I would definitely remove the seats to aide in the console removal.  Along with the 2 screws in the compartment there is also a 90 degree bracket under the dash on the passenger side that needs to be removed.  It really helps to feed the oil pressure wire and the amp meter wires thru the firewall a bit to give more freedom of movement of the console as you gain access to disconnect those gages.

Be careful the metal is thin and bend easily; I added an additional support to the back side to help it maintain it's original shape.

When removing the console on a 1968; be CERTAIN to unhook the battery first.

AS noted ...disconnect battery first. Passenger seat removal is a help. DONT mix up alt wires when re-installing. And after applying new woodgrain, use the heat gun from the bottom lightly to set the adhesive, it is not very good . Don try any spray on additional adhesives, it will make it lumpy , trust me .   Good luck !

You will need to have one made.

Also remember the 4spd and auto pans are different
