I would suggest that you watch a few YouTube videos on how these really work before buying one. After watching them I'm not sure this will work as a tracking device if you hide them in your car. They are not really intended to be used on something that is stolen as they emit a binging sound every so often and if the thief has an Iphone it will alert them of the device. Anyway, I was ready to order a few until watching the videos.

Looks like if the guy has an air tag app he can find yours. All he needs to do is add his and tag your car as his as it moves away he'll be alerted yours is tracking him.

Our daughter had the grandson wear a Gizmo watch whenever he was out and about. She (and anyone with the app and permission) could track him. It was accurate right down to where he was in a line at Disneyland.

Sort of but if you leave something far away, the Apple Big Brother spy network can find it, ping the location to iCloud and notify you where it is on a map.

If someone stole your car and had an iPhone, they would also be alerted there is an Airtag if they are part of the network

Ok here we go this if how I understand it from reading Apples write up on the Air Tag

They are marketing them for things that get lost that are important like luggage, purse, wallet, backpack etc....
Sooo let's say you put one in a luggage bag and you fly to France.......you get there no luggage.......so you go to Find My Friends Apple app and you see it's in New York.........you have several choices ( see picture of actual screen shot of one in my car)

You can TURN ON A PING so someone will notice it or NOT.

The way this thing works is YES it has to be in Bluetooth range of ANY IPHONE..........Apple states there are over a BILLION IPhone s in the world using the find my friend app.......so catch this......this technology has been available from day 1 to Apple ( they know more about you then your wife)

So whenever ( could be an hour, day, month) someone with an IPhone with Bluetooth on walks in range of the Air Tag the magic starts..........that Air Tag was paired ONLY to your phone........so a signal starts to travel from phone to phone to tower to iCloud until it reaches you half way around the world because it's knows your unique iPhone serial number.
And just like that you found the missing item.......now you can choose to make it ping so someone will notice it......or call the cops, or go get it yourself.

Imagine you are the thief and you have an iPhone with AirTag tracking "turned on". As you speed away with your new acquisition your iPhone alerts you that someone else's AirTag is travelling with you and is separated from the iPhone it was paired with. So you pull over and begin searching the car. Eventually the AirTag starts beeping and you find it. Then you chuck it in the nearest trash can (or another vehicle) and take off secure in the knowledge that the owner can't track you any longer.

To me if worths a try vs paying 25-30 bucks a month for an active GPS tracker.........

The "anti theft"  Trunk Monkey is one of the all-time best.  It's not enough to just wack the thief over the head a few times.  A good Trunk Monkey, disposes of the body!

In the hiking/backpacking world, these are being used to track backpacks.  Many establishments do NOT want stinky backpacks inside their store or restaurant.  They usually have a place for hikers to "stash" the pack.  But they have been know to walk off!  High-Tech backpacking gear is expensive and once stolen, the hike is shut down for a week or more while they drop $$$ replacing $300 sleeping bags and such.

That all said, I have IPHONES.  My wife can be 200 miles away from me (her in east of Dallas and me out in the wilderness on a 10 mile hike) and I can open "Find My IPHONE" and see down to the block, where she is.  And she can "see" me.  These little devices look to be using the same technology.

The Air Tag is silent at ALL times.........unless you turn it on......see picture I posted of the app.....

the unwanted tracking.....means the thief won't know its in your car....

Thanks, Stu, for the heads up. I am going to talk to my son's wife about this as she works for Apple and is a product specialist. Yeah, I get some good prices on Apple products. I'm not an Apple person but now I own an Ipod(not using it much anymore), Ipad, Iphone and a new Ipad for my wife(mine is old and not supported anymore). She has an Iphone(My last 2 were hand me downs from my kids but hers was bought new). Did i say I'm not an apple person? LOL. I will never own an IMAC(famous last words?) Gary
