The small letter tire can be found if you know where to look. In case of car 159 however the large letter tire is what came on it when first built.

Now we know where the number 280 came from.


The October 6th internal 'MEMO' noted approximately 230 units would get the early large letter Goodyear tires.
After that the Ford base units would get the small lettered Goodyear tires.

Since the letter states 'approximately' and we know SAI did not complete the cars in order of the Ford VINs delivered,
the SAI VIN numbers are likely not in consecutive order.

I purchased a set of small letter Goodyears about four months ago for my car and they arrived in a week. Coincidentally, I received an email last night from Speedway Motors (where I purchased the tires) stating that Kelsey Tire doesn't expect to ship these again until end of March 2022. Glad I was able to get mine when I did.

The '6A' (smooth) trim material was a replacement for a SHORTAGE at Ford. I've been tracking that for a while. The material shortage occurred on certain days and was limited to a few of the last Shelby DSO groups. As supplies were replenished, Ford went back to the '5A' trim as Shelby ordered in those DSO groups. That was definitely NOT an intentional backward step.

I'd love to hear more about the lettered tires for late '67 changing and look at any evidence of that occurring.
Others who know anything on this subject are encouraged to chime in.
