two piece nose part II

First I would like to thank everybody for the info on the two piece nose for the 1967 Shelby's. It help me a lot in getting the front nose squared away. From the enlarging the holes in back of the inboard light buckets to the color or lack of color on the rivets.

So I thought I would start another thread on the two piece nose because I have more questions about detail of the 2 piece nose and I didn't want to clog up the info on on the first thread unless the moderator deems the following questions are OK to move to the original post on two piece noses.

So here are my observations and questions and note I've researched on this site about more detail on the two piece nose and also reviewed the 1967 Shelby GT250/GT500 Master assembly manual but still have questions.

In my original post I thought the vertical bracket that holds the inboard lights was split and someone welded the two pieces back together but cleaning everything up, it was not split in two but welded at one time to the triangle brace on the horizontal bar that the fiberglass nose piece rivets to. Based on the pictures on the original thread, it should have not been welded to that piece, correct?

I ordered the AMK rivet kit for the Shelby nose and it comes with 15 rivets, Where do all the rivets go, my nose only has 3, two on/in opening of the upper grill and one on the lower valence  holding the two pieces of the nose together.

On the early 2 piece slanted grills, was there a U-shaped rubber used on the edge of the grills?

The finish of the black paint on the on all brackets I assume was a satin black? Gloss or satin on the headlight buckets that hold the bulbs?

Again, thank you for your help.

Terry, great that you are getting your car squared away.

As these cars were evolving I'm not sure any two were exactly the same and that workers were trying different solutions so in my opinion there are some variances.

In response to your questions:

In the previous thread I did state;
Images added: early inboard light car with the plates for mounting the headlight buckets and the hood latch support bracket (Ford) modified by Shelby.  Note there is a weld where (some?) of the nose support/license plate bracket got welded to the hood support bracket, this seems to be where the cut and re-weld is on the bracket in question.  Could be it was cut during removal or accident repair at some point and then spot welded to re-attach??

It was a bit hard to see from the image you had posted, but you confirm that your hood support it wasn't cut and welded, but cut/separated at the weld from the hood support bracket and the weld material was still present.  OK, that is clear now.  Unfortunately in the attached image that weld is obscured by the wire that feeds the one light and the other side is hidden by the bracket itself.

I ordered the AMK rivet kit for the Shelby nose and it comes with 15 rivets, Where do all the rivets go, my nose only has 3, two on/in opening of the upper grill and one on the lower valence  holding the two pieces of the nose together.

I don't think AMK sells kits for "all" of the early '67 nose attachment variations.  And the kit you have is intended for the  one-piece nose that was secured with more of the large rivets that may have been used on two-piece and/or early noses.  Also, after a little bit "later" (relative time frame) cars had rivets holding the very bottom lip/tabs of the nose to the lower front cross-brace (pink circles), earlier cars didn't or seem to have only had a couple.  Additionally, the two-piece vertical upper grille section was attached with these large rivets at the two tabs on the lower edge of that grille section (red circles), some/many car need them for that use. And then the lower edge of the upper angled two-piece grille and the upper edge of the lower two-piece grille were held to the rear of the nose support brace with the large rivets. Yet another inconsistency on these cars!

On the early 2 piece slanted grills, was there a U-shaped rubber used on the edge of the grills?

The protective strip was only on the very bottom edge of the one-piece angled and only on the very bottom edge of the lower piece of the two-piece grilles of all cars and variations.  It was used to protect that lower edge of the metal grille from damaging the paint on the lower lip top surface of the nose.  one for that edge of every car, both grille mesh patterns (inboard and outboard) and all grille variations (one-piece and all two-piece).

Hope this helps, and will find images to add and I'm sure others will contribute too...

JD, those photo should prove very helpful.

I just sent Terry an email with photos of George's #0772, a survivor, to show the rivet locations for the fiberglass 2-pc nose
(they look the same)

It appears to have 9 rivets for the fiberglass nose and two additional smaller rivets heads for the 'vertical' grille.
I believe Terry's car #0504 is a slanted 2 piece grille so it should not need these additional smaller rivets.

Update and of course more questions. I blew apart the front nose piece because it looked pretty bad and I didn't know f the hardware was correct. The screens were held in by small wood screws with washers and up by the headlight buckets allen head screws were used, is this correct? I looked at various books including the 1967 Shelby exploded view manual (Not much help in regard to the front nose piece) and I need a little help with what was used for hardware. As you can see the nose piece is in pretty shape.

Both of your hardware items are wrong. Typically large rivets on holding the grills and PO washer head bolts (like fender) and flange nuts on the nose. Upper most fasteners on nose are threaded studs with flange nuts.  I hope this helps.

Small issue about the 67 Shelby assembly manual: It is written late in the assembly year, so, much does not apply to the early cars.
So, take the assembly manual, and a pen to: 1) a convention to take note from cars that are near your car's assembly date, 2) or to large meets with Shelbys (IE; Indiana SAAC spring Fling etc), 3) Check out Concours Mustang .com for information, 4) Bob G and Mr Speegle are good resources to notate.
