How do you identify the early narrow pattern Cobra t-10? Would it have aluminum case and tailshaft? Would it have a T10B cast on the case? Any other identifying marks? I have a chance to buy an aluminum case T-10B but I have been unable to determine what it came out of. Thanks.

tjs,
You might punch in and search 4 speed transmissions for a galaxies, 62-65.
I am sure pictures and numbers will pop up.
Chances are that is what it is, but do not take my thoughts on it.

Some had narrow case in front to bolt to bell housing
Others had outside bolts holes and inside bolt narrow holes
As Some were actually all aluminum boxes, ? lightweights etc.
I had a 63 1/2 lightweight, it had an all aluminum box, B/W  >>> they are real long in length.

Hope this may help,
Merry Christmas

Narrow pattern aluminum case was Cobra , lite weight Galaxie, Thunderbolt only. GT350s had the wide flange and short tailshaft in aluminum.

Then you consider gear sets. There were at least three different gear sets for aluminum transmissions in Cobras. Not every set has the same desirability.

Here is what is listed as SERVICE transmissions and one race part as of May 31, 1965. (direct quotes from Shelby American parts book)

A T10B would typically be an iron main case narrow pattern bolt pattern main housing. A T10L would be an aluminum main case narrow bolt pattern.

So it sounds like all the early Cobra trans. are aluminum and are T10L? And if it is an aluminum case T10B trans. it came in a lightweight or T-Bolt? Sounds like the everyday production cars had a cast Iron case. Is this correct? Thanks.

Here's a couple of pics of the trans in question. trying to figure out what it may have come out of.

That one is from an FE application because of the input tip length. (short).
