During late 1966, Mercury launched its new, European styling Cougar as a 1967 model that was so popular that sales nearly doubled the entire brand sales of 1966 models. Cougar was selected as Motor Trend magazines' Car of the Year, and to help launch the new nameplate, L-M Division offered a special edition Group 2 high performance version as the platform for a team of cars to race the highly popular Trans-American Sedan Championship. L-M's racing boss, Fran Hernandez sponsored Bud Moore of Spartanburg, SC to race the schedule in addition to other non-TA events. Dan Gurney, Team Cougar captain, and Parnelli Jones were lead drivers, among other noted drivers. The team won 5 races that season and led the Manufacturers Championship point race into the last race at Kent, Washington only to have "bad luck" stymie both Gurney and Jones to lose the championship by 2 points to arch-rival Mustang, Carroll Shelby's team. This car is a replica of Gurney's #16 Cougar car (with modern updates) in Team Cougar livery with period correct decals, period correct 289 engine with dual 4-bbl induction, T-10 4-spd transmission, and posi-trac rear with over-riders. None of the original cars have survived, and only four Trans-Am Cougars in Bud Moore configuration are believed to exist, all replicas.

My plan when building this car was to vintage race and attended two Walter Mitty events with track time, but no competition. Life issues side-tracked this plan, and it has not been driven for months, although stored. This car is currently licensed and insured as a street car. It was invited to Bud's 90th birthday celebration when he signed it under the hood and includes other memorabilia with his autograph and interview. The full vin number is 7F91C544412, I have receipts for over $136k spent on the car and offer it for $80k
