can someone post a picture of a correct gas cap. And where would I go about in purchasing one?

Dont buy the one in a GM box, its smaller diameter. Ask me how I know. 😉

Or the Ford one with a 70 D0 part number because it is for the smaller diameter CA emissions filler neck.

Any idea if there is a difference between a Stant G40 and a G-40A?

There is a difference, and there is also a difference in the various generations of G40A cap that are for sale. The one I posted a link to is the least expensive one on eBay that fits your car. Others might fit but won't look right because they are an earlier or later style.

Thanks Royce. The one you posted sold out(probably last night). I found other more expensive  G-40A but also a G40 and couldn't tell the difference just looking at them. So I need to watch the difference even in a Stant G-40A box marked cap?  here is the G-40 https://www.ebay.com/itm/161995216242?hash=item25b7aad572:g:NHoAAOSwG-1W0K82

Yes there are earlier and later versions, even versions that are sold today by Stant. If it's an G40A it will function and fit but there are visual differences in earlier or later ones that are too varied for anyone to describe. Most of us want to buy one that looks right too.

FYI only the early versions can be modified the same way as per the factory GT500 vent recall to be non venting.

learn something new Bob, I didn't know they modified the GT500 caps. I just thought they went with a  non vented cap. FWI I got the "G 40-A" on my car.

Yes It was probably easier to modify the stock cap then sourcing a non vented cap.The recall details cover the method. The non vented caps used back in the day are extremely hard to find today
