I have seen these stripes applied both ways. The registry directions and directions that came with the stripes suggest pic 1 is correct.  Pic 2 is common. Judges which is correct for early Hertz car?? click on each pic to see difference

Although not infallible (who or what is?) a good rule of thumb is to trust the registry. Pic one is common style for a Hertz car without the center stripe at the door gap side. Pic 2 with the center stripe section just after the door gap (of course without a H)is common for a non Hertz car.

+1 to Bob's comment and good for you for checking and not following the crowd.

Here are a few examples. First for the period and a magazine shoot showing an example from the 500's followed by just some that I have pictures of in original paint from the teen's

Thanks guys. As I just recently added a Hertz to the stable I was wondering about this.

Time for another FB group 😂. Like there aren't enough already

"66 Shelby Hertz cars with correct side stripes"

Ps.  Also, here is another piece of "extraordinary proof" to carry in my trunk bag to support my extraordinary claim. 🤓

FYI any extraordinary proof may need to be reasonably relevant for your specific car or series of cars. Just because something out of the ordinary is on one  car doesn't mean that it was that way on another car. Just saying. ;)

So, I guess Cragars were available on Hertz cars too.   ;)

The Hertz car in the color folder it's likely the prototype and the Hertz Magnum 500's were not available when made.  There is also a vintage image with the aluminum ten spokes on a Hertz car.  I expect Shelby American Inc. and Hertz had not dialed in the final recipe for production cars and that's why we see these variations. It's probably applies to the side stripe as well.

...Only when combined with the different side stripe position... :o

ALWAYS IMHO have to take advertising and prototype pictures with a grain of salt. Way too many examples of ideas, thoughts and hopes that that never made their way onto the production cars.
