The lettering is raised not etched in the tag.
The etching refers basically to the art work and not the vin numbers and letters. 65 ,66 and 67 tags are metal stamped.68 are raised.

Rub your fingers over all the lettering and CS logo, it's not flat it's raised.

How it works - a negative is produced of what the tag should look like. The material has a coating on it. The negative is placed on the material and exposed - like film. The light hardens the coating and the rest (not exposed to light) is then washed off. The material is then put into an acid. Where the metal is not protected by the coating it it eaten away (on the SA tags it's the background not the letters - making the letters seem raised). It's then washed (different bath) to get the hardened coating off and the lower etched area is then filled with paint.

Let's be thankful that reproduction tags appear so and hopefully remain that way. Stamp that repop silkscreened version and live with it.

The letters don't "seem raised" they are - Here is a photo that shows the raised letters.

I believe this to be an original tag. Do you agree?
