Ford has wasted money in downtown Detroit for years. There is a lot of neat architecture but zero desire for anyone to live or work there. They built the Ren Center to be their new HQ. Nobody wanted to be there so they sold the place to GM. Ford did keep the parking lots and GM employees have been paying Ford for the privilege of parking at work for years.

Brett, informative article. Thanks for the link.

I agree with you 100%. What a waste of cash when the EV part of Ford is hemorrhaging money at a deadly rate.

I appreciate the desire to preserve and restore historic architecture, but this is located in a sh!thole area, and wasn't even a Ford building in the first place.

You can't save them all.

PS: That is a cool photo of everything lit up in Ford Blue.  But, how many cars will they have to sell to amortize out the cost of this boondoggle of a good deed project?

Probably the date they broke ground or applied for the permits. Wiki has 1912 as a opening date and also 1914 in the same article.
They have also built a strip of road with wireless EV charging there.

Ford ownership
On March 20, 2018, The Detroit News published an article noting the Ford Motor Company was in talks to buy the structure. On May 22, 2018, ownership of the building was transferred from the Moroun-owned MCS Crown Land Development Co. LLC. The Moroun family confirmed on June 11, 2018, that Ford was the new owner of the building. Ford purchased the station along with the Roosevelt Warehouse. Ford plans to turn the building into a hub for its autonomous vehicle development and deployment, and it will be the anchor for the company's Corktown campus. The building will hold both Ford offices and offices of suppliers and partner companies. The first floor concourse will reopen to the public with restaurants and retail. Housing will also be created on the top floors. Restoration and renovations are expected to be completed by 2022.

I do believe this edifice has been restored to its former glory

Some would call it "concours".....
