Thing starts right up, no choke just two kicks to the accelerator. Then purs like a kitten with solid lifters....

Surprised you're not getting some binding with the throttle rod installed like that, should look like this...

Hi Dave

Thanks for the picture. Truly don't know why it is that way.

We purchased as is and slowly are attempting to correct the maladies. Thats the way the carb we replaced was set up.

When I have an opportunity I will attempt to place it like the picture you provided.

Thanks again

It's a tin pot operation.  Unsteady camera, poor angles.  I use classical and romantic era music as it remains in the public domain and the composers can't chase me down for a copyright strike.  If they did, that would be a neat trick.  I do what I can with a phone but I would like to get a real and decent video camera along with a gimbal for a steadier shot.  Plus a good drone for aerial shots.  Perhaps I am a frustrated and/ or failed screen writer and director and settled for law as the consolation prize.  And I need to lose ten pounds of fat.  It has become harder since I turned sixty.  But I have a plan.  If I stop eating, I can't keep the extra ten pounds of fat forever.  Or can I?

Well it's me again, everyone's favorite shade tree mechanic.

Today I tackled the very loose auto shifter in our 1966 GTH.

Instead of purchasing one from a vendor for +/- $250 - 300 U.S. dollars and receiving a part made in SHINE - AAAA we decided to rebuild our own original shifter

First let me tell you I researched quite a few instructional videos on the net. And all of them are not at all up front with the time they tell you it takes to rebuild this shifter.

Some say 15 minutes up to 1 hour or so.

It took me about 3 hours. First we do not have a lift, we are grounded and have a floor jack and some basic tools.

These are the steps I took:

Step 1: Remove Shifter Handle
Step 2: Remove Shifter Bezel
Step 3: Remove Shifter Retaining Plate
Step 4: Remove Shifter Bucket Hardware
Step 5: Remove Shifter Bucket
Remove the cotter pin connecting the shifter linkage rod to the transmission linkage. Then, slide the washers off and the linkage should disconnect. Now, remove the shifter bucket from the car. FOUND IT EASIER GOING THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF CAR

OUR CAR THE PREVIOUS GENIUS HAD PUT IN 1,000 WASHERS ATTEMPTING TO CURE THE EXCESS PLAY IN THE SHIFTER

Step 6: Remove Shifter Nut
Step 7: Remove Shifter Lever and Shifter Linkage
Step 8: Clean the Shifter Bucket
Remove any broken or deteriorated bushings where the arms connected and clean up the area.
HERE WE TOOK OUT TIME BY CLEANING THIS AREA

Step 9: Install Replacement Bushings
Slide the two replacement bushings from the kit into place on the shifter bucket. One goes on the outside of the bucket while the other goes inside.
WE ALSO LUBRICATED ALL THE MOVING PARTS AND BUSHINGS

Step 10: Reinstall Shifter Bucket

You need to order these two set of bushings

The replacement bushings that go into place on the shifter bucket

Lubricate them before installing the complete shifter

This is the other set of bushings

This is where the previous OWNER had 1,000 washers

Lubricate them before installing the complete shifter

So where did I get the parts ?

The old internet assisted me

We found the following parts and prices

Gear shift insulation bushings reduced from $10.29 to $4.54

The auto trans shift bushing each $2.02

The auto trans (ours was in pieces) shift seal $6.61 reduced to $2.04

So with some patience and about $20 bucks your shifter will be as good as new.

Ain't that one pretty o.e.m. shifter?

No SHINE - AAAA here !

That Bushing is like the one used for the Brake (and Clutch) Peddle Assembly.

I viewed several "after market" alternatives, but was not convinced

They where close, but not close enough

If the originals kinda sorta lasted from 1966 to 2024 (possibly changed before 2024)

Then I will stick with the o.e.m. design
