I saw a 68 GT500 today with the antenna mounted on the front passenger side as you would find on a regular 68 Mustang. The owner said the car was built January of 68. I thought all 68 Shelby's had the antenna mounted on the driver side rear. Was this a factory oversight?

On a early car it would not be unusual to see the antenna on the front fender. On later cars it would . The antenna's were dealer installed typically during dealer prep. Consequently there are variations. The practice to install them on the rear quarter transitioned to the better reception position on the rear quarter.  It was found that the AM signal could be interfered with by electrical interference from the cars ignition coming through the unshielded all fiberglass hood so moving it far away from the hood provided better static free reception .

Very interesting. Thanks for the great explanation.

#659 was built in December 1967 and had the antenna in the right front fender.  It also had an antenna cable run to the left rear fender area.

The cable to the rear quarter was installed by AOSmith on all the 1968 Shelbys.
