Gas Cap Early car

My car, #81, rolled off the San Jose assembly line in 1964 and was transformed into a Shelby in December. I heard that the early cars, including regular 1964 1/2 Mustangs had a gas cap with no tether. Is this in fact true?

The earlier "1964 1/2" Mustangs did come with gas caps without the attaching cable, but by the time the GT350 Mustangs were produced, they all had the cables.

The non-retaining gas caps were phased out of Dearborn production around May/June of '64.  As far as I know, San Jose never installed them since they didn't start up production until July '64.
