information needed on "s" scratch 428 block

I have an "s" scratch 428 block with a very early Jan 1967 date.  I'm having trouble getting information on it.  So does any one know about them like what the s stands for, how many were produced etc?

I have a few late 66' blocks but they have an "A" scratch.

Do you have a picture of the deck?

Most 428 blocks are "C" or "A" scratch.

It is not unprecedented for a 428 to have an "S" scratch.
I'm guessing yours is January 67?

My 1966  C6ME block is an upside down incomplete A scratch.

The blocks have standard 428 deck { where the heads mount } but the main cap area look like a cross bolt 427 that wasn't finished with spacers and bolts.

The "Norbs" as I have heard those called can show up on many blocks. Is the main webbing reinforced? I have a block with the unmachined oil pressure relief valve with 66 427 on the back. Not a 427.

Do you have a picture of the deck? As it was explained on the 428CJ forum the easiest way to differentiate a 428 block...

The top 2 pictures show a non-428 block, the bottom 2 show a true 428 block. Note the shape of the water passage holes.

   Tony,
     The "scratched letters" were done by foundry workers and DO NOT appear on factory blueprints for the blocks. Raw castings are very generic looking and the letter scratched in the bellhousing area was done to make ID'ing the different blocks easier. The foundry was HUGE and there were many "stations" the blocks went to so a simple in house ID method was developed. This happened on "some" small block engines as well. Without first hand information from someone who worked there at the time ( tough to find one 50 years after the fact)  anything is a guess at best. I am going to the Cobra Jet reunion this weekend and there will be retired Ford engineers there . I will ask to see if anyone of them has any insight. Besides the "special" guess , I offer "stationary" as in industrial pump motors that were "extremely" popular at the time. BUT that is a guess too.

  And an added FYI is on the 427 that hole is round.

Yes the block has the webbing and the correct water jackets for the 428.  The picture of the water jacket shape isn't great but will send it anyway.
