5R002

Daytona, November 1965.  Chuck Cantwell in the Shelby-American engineering car, 5R002, turns it on around the infield portion of the Daytona circuit.  Close behind is the Midwestern Divisional Champion, Brad Booker.  Cantwell's GT-350 features the second generation competition front end that included fiberglass ducting instead of the original hoses to bring fresh air to the front disc brakes.  The fiberglass ducts were routed along the inner body panels an did not go through the engine compartment as the hoses did.  Chuck Cantwell put over 2,000 track miles on 5R002 during 1965 as the GT-350 served as a mobile laboratory for all the improvements that were incorporated into the R models.  The GT-350 also saw race action at Willow Springs where Chuck took first place. At Daytona Cantwell was an alternate and he and 5R002 did not see race action, as all of the BP competitors who qualified made the race.

Quote from: trotrof1 on September 19, 2024, 01:11:28 PMBack when speeding tickets were $25 and they made you dump your beer out on the ground.

Ain't that the truth. Poured out plenty of beer back in the day...
Cops would make us pour out the open beer and they would confiscate what was left of the unopened or you could be ticketed. Different times. I learned the value of a FDRS in my 69 Mach1 back then. Good for hiding beer real quick.

After buying my 428 69 Mach1 off of Dan's Ex I was going through the glovebox and found one of those shirt pocket buttons like those old metal ones that would say you voted or promoting a candidate. It had the red circle with the diagonal line through it(no). It also had PARDEE on the button. I asked Dan what it was all about. He said there was a builder named PARDEE that was being boycotted and those buttons were from that. Someone had the idea to get a bunch and pass them out at a convention. Don't know what year but I got the button somewhere. Over the decades I always enjoyed the next ad by Howard in the publications.

Gary, thanks for the info. Maybe someone still has the button. ;)

I found my "Shelby" boxes over a week ago and I get up every morning and read through a couple publications. I hope everybody is enjoying the treasures here as much as I am.  I haven't been this excited about something Shelby in a long time.

I have left a couple out as these are, well "different times"

Best part about this topic... NO interruptions. ;D

Dave Pelsue was a member of COCOA. COCOA did a calendar with his artwork. They lost their shirt on the deal. They only sold about 1/4 of what they had printed.
