looking for a 65-70 Shelby prefer a survivor/project

Hello  Long time 69 mustang guy and have had a Factory five cobra for 24 years :)

I am looking for my first og Shelby.  I would like to keep it around the 75k mark but can stretch over 100k for the right car.  Non running is ok but much prefer and intact car.  Automatics are ok.  68 is probably my preferred year but I am open!

Don't kid yourself with your budget. It's a you can pay me now or pay me later world. In the end you'll spend more buying a project than a good driver car. The only way you could possibly come out ahead is if you can personally swap out rusted sheet metal do the body and paint work along with being a capable mechanic who can overhaul the drivetrain. You'll also need to rely on repro parts since a lot of "affordable" project cars have had the expensive bits sold off.

100% agree a basketcase is a labor of love. And a loosing $ proposition.  That said I am ok owning one :)

what does a legit concours type restoration cost now.  Like an original car with all its parts there, teardown, rebuild, body, paint, assembly, paint markings, stickers etc?  Best case scenario 100k?  or can it be 75k?  From one of the handful of guys in the nation that know how to do this?

I don't intend to go down that path, I am more interested in having a good driver or sweaty survivor.  Bonus points if its actually one that could logistically be restored.  like the bat gt500 below.

something like the 73k gt500 project to Brets 89k gt350.  Brets car is a great candidate, but I kind of prefer a 67-68 or a 69 gt500.

They are still out there. I bought one last May. The key is of course if you can't do any of the work yourself buy one done or a presentable driver. I got a lot of hours in already restoring many of the components on the car and now the car is out for some body work. Yes, original parts are hard to find as I'm still looking for many. I think car owners are hoarding their spare parts.

I don't see any scenario where a restoration is $75k.  Or even a $100k.  More like $150k, and that depends on the level, as well as the car.  There are some very, very expensive parts on a '65, a correct transmission can be $20k.  I'm not as familiar with the later years' pricing, but everything is costly.  Buy one done, or close if you are on a tight budget.

Don't think I would refer to it as "hoarding" but often just opportunities that came along to acquire parts for trading. Just like most, in the past, collector car owners since often people with the parts you need may not want to sell but are willing to trade one difficult part for another. As stated by car guys in my father's generation - You can work and make more money but you can't make an original part you need. Or something like that  :)

I have a '68 GT 350 that I have owned since 5K miles / 1969. It has been stored since 1975 and runs fine.  I have just recently decided to sell it. It would make an excellent driver -which was my plan, but that no longer the case. It is definitely a survivor -99% original -but part of that survival includes rust. If I were keeping it as a driver, I could repair the significant rust myself in roughly 2-300 hours, including painting the repaired areas. If interested please private message me -greenehouse.

Check your SENT folder also.  I believe these forum software counts the total emails.  Inbox might have 5 in it but your SENT folder has 195 on a 200 limit.   Check SENT and delete most.
