SoCal member- what are housing options if you need a garage?

My wife and I would have discussed moving from the northeast to the San Diego area to be near our daughter. My dilemma is that of course that house prices are double what's near me now for a comparable house and we very rarely have neighborhood crime. I am wondering from members who know that area if you have recommendations for places to look. An 800k house is not in my cards so I will probably have to settle for towns further out.
What I'm looking for:
1) Towns within one hour of San Diego
2) Where I could have a garage for four cars squeezed in
3) Where I won't have a high risk of someone "visiting" my garage when I'm not around
From a car guy perspective any town/neighborhood suggestions?

PS- please avoid all the political feedback- I'm aware of what I would be getting into as well as the cost of living, homelessness issues etc. I'm just hoping to get some local insight into a place near my kid where I can still keep a couple cars from our family and where I'm not going to get my house broken into every year. I'm wondering if that's even possible even in the 600-700k range. Thanks in advance for your insight!

You might find something in the Menifee area. You'll need to add the extra parking most will only have 2-3 car garage. My parents had an acre by Newport & Murietta. We built a 24x48 garage on that. That area has grown in the past 5-10 years.
It's a catch 22 in SoCal - the price goes down and the crime goes up. Expensive homes near poorer area are easy targets. Check the web for crime stats in the areas you find.
Sun City above Menifee is a 55+ community.

800K will be very tough. 4 car garage would be a very very expensive house.  I am not to familiar with areas an hour or even more east of San Diego so perhaps you could find something that way.  A very nice condo in a desirable area in So Cal with its own attached garage starts around 750K

San Diego is awesome.  Ive been trying to move there for years but to get an equally priced home our property taxes would be comparable to the mortgage of a nice home in most places of the country. Ca is very nice but respecting your request (as well as forum rules) Ill leave it at that.

I think your looking for a Unicorn for the price you want.

   Good luck,Roy

Check out high octane properties website (they are on Instagram too) and see if they have something in the area. Barndominions are awesome for car guys.

We plan on moving to AZ to escape your "PS". Your OP caused me to take a look at what's currently available where our daughter would prefer to inherit. This one is 5 hours from San Diego. It has a 4 car garage. That lower level covered RV parking cries out to be enclosed and a 4 post lift installed.

I moved from the Northeast to San Diego 20 years ago. First, you will be hard pressed to find anything decent within an hour under $1,000,000. Second, a 3-4 car garage is extremely rare in almost any price range. I have a good size 2 car and a rented storage space for my other cars and equipment. Not ideal but it works. And its always 65 and sunny and we have a great car culture.

Having said that, look into Escondido, La Mesa, El Cajon or Chula Vista.

Thanks for all the feedback and ideas I really appreciate the insight.

I checked out Lake Elsinore and the areas east of Pendleton and it does seem like that is far more reasonable than San Diego County. I'll also check out the Escondido, Chula Vista areas etc and look at the crime rates per area.  The car guy in me dreads getting rid of a car and my parts hoard but it's just going to come down to downsizing to leave closer to my daughter in SD and that costal atmosphere or going inland and to a more desert like area to get more space with maybe a 3car garage.   I thought about renting garage space but that also seems super expensive- guess I can't have it all!!!! Thanks again.

I think you would do better to live in a free state and travel if you want to visit.

Where did you buy those rose colored glasses?

Elsinore is not a good place - better than it was in the 70s but still marginal. Chula Vista is also marginal. Try to get further north of the border.
One option may be finding a 50s house built on a foundation with an attached garage. Those generally have a tall enough garage to put a 4 post lift in for extra parking.

Anything less than 1 mill is considered a dump now in Ca. Try Vista, Ca. Its in northern San Diego County. Btw, water is not 'scarce' in Vegas. Its like LA, on watering restrictions...

Commiefornia? You folks enjoy our federal tax dollars....hows the economy where you live.Immigrants would be my neighbors, generally decent ,law abiding Christian people.Been all over SoCal and haven't seen a law broken in years outside of speeding. If you hate Cali. don't come here we don't need the negative energy.Again,we are fine here, great quality of life.Sadly haters will always be haters.Again,no one is asking you to come here,so if where you live is so swell stay there.Weird when a site that is supposed to be about cars(the best of which were made in Cali becomes political....As your hero ( apparently) would say"sad"........
