Hello, brand new member. I have possession of a 67 GT500. I am having trouble tracing the VIN. I tried to get a Marti report, but it said I had the wrong number of digits. It said there should be 11, I have 13. According to the decoder I looked at, 13 is correct.

Can anyone help me out?

Why don't you post the Shelby number?

13 digits is the most common for a 1967 Shelby

They may be asking for the Ford VIN , that's 11 numbers

For new Shelby owners this information may not be known but there are two sets of different VIN's on a 65-67 Shelby. Typically Marti requires you to send them the Shelby VIN on the metal tag and ALSO the Ford Mustang VIN metal stamped into the apron that is typically visible underneath the metal Shelby tag before they will do a report on a 65-67 Shelby .

Is OK, then, to remove the Shelby tag to get the Ford number. I don't want to make the wrong move.

thx

That's the only way to see it unless you can see it from the bottom

It is OK to remove the VIN tag . It is done all the time for restoration etc. You can take a 1/8 drill bit and carefully drill out the rivet . Aluminum silver color hardware store type rivets were used on the the very early cars (first few hundred at most) and typically black anodized on the the later versions  . AMK products sells the black anodized rivets. If it has silver ones and is a later car it has already been removed before. Anyway you can typically drill out one rivet and pivot the VIN plate back enough to expose the Ford VIN which is most typically directly under the tag .You may want to drill both out so they will both match each other in patina. If it is not under there get back to us for more search details.

The Ford Vin is also stamped under each fender lip closer to the windshield so by removing a few fender bolts
and pry the fender up a bit I will most likely see the Ford Vin 7R02QXXXXXX.

You can check on the passenger side front inner fender panel in front of the shock tower under the fender lip  if the panel has not been replaced bu accident or rust repair or the drivers side  in front of the shock tower.  Not IMHO one of Fords better idea since in 65-66 they were stamped also behind the shock towers or on some years on the shock tower metal

67 Passenger side VIN

67 Drivers side VIN - stamp twice so you can pull one rivet or lift the fender to see the other. Normally these are stamped with the top (purple arrow) VIN visible in or near the fender notch and the lower (green arrow) under the fender lip

Or try to clean and read from the bottom side
