Note:
The first image the piece in question is one piece for both light buckets to attach to and has the 3 holes as well as the buckets are attached to the plate with self-tapping sheet metal screws and the wires have the sheathing.

The second image is two separate pieces each with one hole and the headlight buckets are attached to the plates with bolts and the wires are tape wrapped.

(Both of these seem to be posted up-side down, below they are rotated to match the image in the second post showing more of the car.  Also the second post with the green car shows a two-piece nose)

It's funny - I didn't even think as to whether or not early cars had this backing plate.  I went to look at #22 and didn't seen anything like what was pictures.  And, then I remembered...  ;D

Ruben had an 'early brain fart'.  :)

But seriously, for anyone that has never seen the early configuration outside of a car, it will surprise you.  It really illustrates the hand made aspect of early 1967's.  I restored the original set off of no. 83, I was really amused how non-symmetrical they actually were.  The bushing on one side was 0.25 inches larger than the other side. Like a good friend once said to me, it looks like a drunk cubscout was making these cars back at LAX.  :o

#589 has the three hole design, but it looks almost like the bracket is kind of a combination of the two shown above. It does not have the bracket that goes all the way from one side to the other, the bracket looks more like the one on the two hole design. Don't know how common that is.....Shelby completion date - 01-11-67
