Ol Shel apparently did get in a couple of laps only around 80-90 mph according to my old geezer sources then got out and a hired gun drove it into the record books, except no one remembered his name because SHELBY was supposed to have been the guy doing it! Its still on my agenda to beat that record only with Medium Riser power not High Riser power.

The recording on the record that is inside the vintage 68 Shelby is that of Shelby in the Supersnake . What with the shift points called out by CS as he is driving on the recording he was going a lot faster then 80-90. That is assuming the recording wasn't faked . You should listen to it sometime and decide for yourself. I needed to check with some people that were around back then, that were in the know... and it was Goodell that drove the car into the record books. I know OL SHEL is or was our hero but like many things he did, he had the gift of gab and like a magician he had the slight of hand... you were looking left and he was going right. He didn't set the record in San Angelo Texas that day nor did he accidently find some long lost Cobra chassis in a pile like he said he did, but we know now what we didn't know many decades ago. Just adds to the mystique of the man.

I believe there's two separate tracks being discussed here. The record with CS recording his lap was at Riverside in a GT500, He states he was at 135mph and 7000 rpm. Is there another recording at Texas?

Thanks for stepping in Rich. Yeah, we don't want any misconceptions that the record in the model was recorded at the San Angelo test track in Texas during the Thunderbolt tire test. As you pointed out, it was definitely recorded at Riverside.

We are talking about different things here. The SUPER SNAKE is the fastest SHELBY developed- it was a one off to see how fast a car they could build back then, so they needed a tire to match the speed of the car. This is  where they tested top end speed back then and needed a big track to do so. They used the GoodYear test track to test the best tire they had, and to get the best speed out of the car possible. There were no talking ,no audio recordings, just balls to the wall top end speed car testing. This is where things got a little into the gray area, Goodell drove it into the record books but the Snake Charmer got the credit, sometimes that's the way things workout. A little smoke and mirrors and great PR for SHELBY AMERICAN. Ever been in a room where one lies and everyone agrees to it, Im sure it was something like that.

Why do they still say this is a 1 of 1.  There were two lightweight 427 cars made,   the other was drag raced by one of Shelbys bankers -  Clinton  Luhmann.  He traded in the 66 Supercharged prototype green   6S051 for it.

Actually all three 67 427's had lightweight engines.The first one was a private owner who also had a 427 Cobra and wanted a GT500 with a 427. The second car was the Supersnake . The third car was the drag car. I can't help but wonder if the people at Mel Burns Ford got the idea for the Supersnake and the proposed 50 other cars by copying the private buyer's order.

During the teardown of the MCACN show, the one-of-one Shelby Super Snake rumbled (LOUDLY) by with its Le Mans spec GT40 MKII 427 race engine.

I tried to follow it into a cold adjoining warehouse but couldn't keep up. When I did find it, it had been left alone, parked behind a Reliable Carriers semi, with the windows down, key in the ignition, and no one around.

There it would sit until the truck driver jumped into it to load 'er up.

Just sayin' . . . . .

Hey deathsled (Richard),

I've been wanting to mention to you, that during the hours-long breakdown of the MCACN show, I was hoofing it across the street from the convention center to the Hyatt, and I saw you in 843 idling by the curb.

I must say, that seeing and hearing a real 1966 GT350 on the dark streets of Chicago in late November is just not something a person is accustomed to encountering these days, and it left quite a lasting impression on me.

It was nice to meet another Forum guy in person, and your car looked great!
