’67 Flat Gas Cap Emblem – Got ‘em or Not?

We might as well bring this old forum thread back to track flat gas emblem cars. The total numbers have been noted as low as 60 to just over 100. Here is the list of cars noted to have them (or had them originally, but were replaced in restoration). Car #0082 with its 12/13/66 SA completion date is the latest date we know of. The only GT500's known to have a flat gas cap emblem is the prototype V-738-2 and the first production GT500 #100. Please correct me at if there are any errors or let us know of any additions.

0012 is another, 0003, what about 0019?

#3 currently does not have one, it is thought that because of when it was completed that it "should" have one but some first hand and/or photo proof is needed.

Car #23 does have a flat gas emblem.
Car #66 does have a flat gas emblem.

  Way back when, at SAAC 11 or SAAC 14 -both Dearborn conventions - the talk on the show field was that about 85 cars had it (or is that got it?).  Seems us few early model owners there we not off on the count.

Richstang and I strongly believe that the Shelby seen in the Detroit Auto Show in late '66 is no 003.
Interestly, in the pics it doesn't have a flat gas cap, but it has a GT one instead. You could argue that it was stolen at the show, like the upper red scoop light lens appear to have been, but car 0145 was bought by it's original owner with a GT cap also.  Gives you some doubt as to whether or not 003 ever got one?

Or maybe it was stolen too. Don't dismiss the attraction of this unusual souvenir to a sticky fingered enthusiast. Two screws and its gone. I find it less likely the cars would have left SA without the badging. That brand identification was very important to SA. Just my opinion.

Do you have photos of any of these three cars showing the flat cap emblem?
I don't have any photos of #0012, #0003 is questionable as noted by others, and #0019 shows a curved emblem in my photo file.

Brain, #0003 is a strong possibility for the Detroit show, but so is #0069. No other cars appear to fit the location and timeline as well. That said, I recall on the old forum a post from someone who was there and said it was not a green or black car as they or their father didn't like those colors and he remember that detail very well.

I think there too many questions about #0003 to put it on the list of flat gas caps. As it sits now the car has been altered in too many places. Certainly the early SA completion date supports it having it. If it is the Detroit show car we still have to wonder if it left SA with the "GT" cap or if it was stolen and this "GT" cap was the quick fix the replace it.

I'm going to throw in curveball theories. If the flat gas caps were pre assembled of the assembly line then the highest number currently known (excluding #100 the first GT500) is #0082. That could mean at least 82 cars with had them.

If looking at SA completion dates, #0082 is also the latest car built (SA 12/13/66) with a flat cap as currently known. That could put the total number much higher, up to around 124 cars with them. This "dated" theory could fit in with the Fred Goodell time / cost savings efforts along with the upper scoop lights deletion.

We know of only 2 well documented ones to this point.....any others known   Still looks like they made less than 90 as a total.Cut off date seems to be early January 1967 for all cars.

I was surprised there was even one up until  some years ago. Even more surprised when a service replacement GT500 flat gas cap emblem showed up for sale about 5 years ago. Why would Ford go to the trouble of making service replacement parts for such a low production part? JD still has it I think.

Bob, sorry but not me, I don't have, or had, a GT500 Flat Gas emblem.  If I did I'd post a photo or two to share with the gang.

I missed the GT350 flat one that was on e-pay a few years back - I assumed that you got it but I seem to remember when I asked you about it at one of the SAAC conventions you said you missed that one too.
