Okay, so I'm a new owner and am learning.  I'm curious what people will say to this.  In your opinion, what are the 3-5 most important original parts to have that make a 66 Shelby a 66 Shelby (excluding VIN plate and chassis)?

Maybe a good question would be what are the differences between a '65 and '66.

Then you can delve into carryovers.

289 Hipo Engine, Correct K code 9 inch differential, correct over ride or under ride traction bars,  correct Ray Brown seatbelts and certainly the correct 9000 RPM Cobra tachometer.  Those are my top five but there are ALOT of other things also.
Good Luck

The pedigree & VIN IMHO - parts and modifications can have been added to K codes, even another San Jose built K code fastback but ..............

I agree with Jeff 100%. It's the pedigree and story that make these cars, it's what makes them so much more then just a sum of the parts.

Engine, suspension, transmission, rear differential, rear brakes, functional side scoops, rear quarter window, exhaust, hood for basic starters plus the history as mentioned.  For more, see the 1966 registry.
Just nuts.
