Shelby Side stripe Location

The paint shop is striping my car tomorrow and I'm looking for placement dimensions.
The stripes are still on the quarter which helps but the motor is out making the car ride a little uphill
Right now so I want to make sure they get them right.

Anyone have any measurements from the bottom of the door or anything for the front fender?

If you are piecing in a stripe kit with a existing stripe still on the quarter you are making a big mistake IMO. The reflective properties of the tape of the new stripe may not match that of the existing plus it may have been done wrong in the past etc. You will not be able to tell the reflective match or not unless in the dark with a light shining on it. New stripe kits that are not pieced together have the reflecting properties indexed in the same direction. You should not short cut putting on a 69/70 Shelby stripe IMO. You are asking for problems. No measurements needed from the bottom of the door . The GT350/500 should be centered in the scoop of the front fender and extends in a straight line all of the way back to the rear quarter where the wide part of the stripe splits the rear marker light opening. Those two points determine the straight line. The factory opened up the hole for the marker light by slicing a X in the stripe and folding the pie shape stripe pieces back on the trunk side of the opening. About a 1/4 -1/2 inch or so of stripe material is folded in on the back side of the fender, both edges of the door and the door jam. From the factory the folded over stripe edges were wiped with yellow contact cement to keep the edges glued down . To recap ,the most common stripe mistakes are that they are not straight ,not centered in the front scoop , the stripe does not split the rear marker light , the marker light hole is cut clean instead of the pie shapes folded in on the trunk side and all of the edges of the stripes that are folded over on the fenders doors etc. should be sealed with a visible coating of yellow contact cement. Yes the cement can be seen as messy but if you want it done like the factory it needs to be visible to a small extent. If you don't like it do it your own way it just will not be like the factory way. It is of course the owners/resto shop's  choice.

I can't understand why so many people the marker light with the center stripe, but it seems more people miss the mark than hit it.

+1. It is hard to look at when I see a perfectly restored 69/70 shelby with the stripe nowhere close to the center of the rear marker light.  Such a shame.

Not only that, I'll bet there are a bunch of original cars where the left side doesn't match the right side? Did they talk?

I was only doing the doors and fenders because only the doors and fenders were painted and the rest of the car is original paint and stripes.

They did it today. It turned out really good. If and when the rest of the car is painted I'll stripe the rest.

For now it turned out great for what we were doing.

Like many details there is a range of what is typically seen and acceptable to most. It's when someones claim or findings that fall outside of that range that things become an issue and owners have to choose to reproduce (if they are certain the detail is original) what may be seen as a defect or fall into the range.


The vast amount of cars I have pictures of are very close as illustrated above.  Glad to always help with pictures when I can

Jeff (Bob, Ed, Tim),

  Do you have any "feelings" or observations on the small stripe extensions past the rear quarter as shown in my pictures above. I had never seen them before and actually left them off of 1584 when reinstalling the stripes. Do you have any pictures similar? Or was whomever was installing the stripes that day feeling creative? I ask as I may eventually strip the car back down and redo the bodywork and paint......
